Sherlock watched Irene, trying to make sense of the emotions flying through his brain. Should he be surprised that she lied to him? Probably not. Yet the feelings of shock and annoyance were undeniable. “Go on then - Enlighten me. What’s the reason?” He moved over to the window, unwilling to look at her. “Irene, this is yet another instance where you’ve omitted or lied about something. I think you’ll understand when I say that I’m getting sick of it. I don’t know where I stand with you if you won’t allow me to fully know you.” There was a pause before he looked back at her again. “You come here and you act like we have some form of friendship but the reality is, I don’t know you. You’re essentially a stranger who I’ve allowed myself to stumble over.”
“Allowed yourself? Well, thank you for your consideration. It’s good to know you had to think about it so carefully like you do everything else.”
The problem with Sherlock was not that he didn’t have a heart- he did. But he chose to let his head lead him, chose to push feelings to one side for the sake of his work, no matter what those feelings were. She understood to an extent, because everybody had to put their feelings aside for the greater good at some point in their life, or for the sake of a job- that was exactly what she’d had to do.
But just because she’d kept her employment with Moriarty from him didn’t mean she didn’t want to tell him. She wanted to tell him a lot of things. Unfortunately secrets were necessary.
“You demand to know every single piece of me like I’m another puzzle to solve, but would you even let me in? Really let me in? I made a mistake. People do that occasionally. And you should know that better than anybody.”
