When he was little, the doodles on himself came few and far between. He spent much more time putting doodles on himself for his soulmate than receiving them. They were both still learning how to read, leading to stilted-at-best conversations and a lot of tic tac toe.
Then, one day, there were no doodles- not even doodle responses. It went on for months- complete silence. Before long, Akira was worried not that something had happened to his soulmate, but that they were gone. Never coming back. Dead or worse.
Eventually, out of the blue, scribbles started appearing again. Small sequences of numbers, arrows connecting phrases and numbers every which way. When he wrote questions back, he got half responses at best, but they always felt rushed or dismissive. His soulmate had bigger, more important things to think about, clearly.
Before long, he found himself in the library, looking at basics of coding, once he figured out what they were from so he could start deciphering what littered his arms, and sometimes thighs. It was all vastly more complicated, but he could at least recognize pieces and commands littered through out. In return, he took to writing lines of his own, often barely finishing them before getting edits or a hastily drawn thumbs up. It was the most interaction he’d ever gotten with his soulmate- an accomplishment, really.
Finally, one day, he decided to take the plunge. They’d never shared much personal information, but the chattier his soulmate seemed to get, the more he needed to know.
It was... late, near the middle of the night. But he wasn’t sure when he’d have the courage to go for it again.
‘hey, my name is akira. what should i call you?’
Akira figured it was a simple enough opener- they could reply with however much they felt comfortable sharing. Or not at all, depending. But he certainly hoped for a response as he laid on his bed in the lamplight.
