Lucan stares down at you in shock and horror, your blood soaking the skin of his arms. “No, no, this isn’t how it’s supposed to be,” he whispers, tightening his grip on you. He leans down and presses his face into your hair, his desperate tears lost in the strands. “You can’t go before me.” His whisper is lost in your pain and the sound of his sobbing. You reach your arms up and touch his back; it’s all you can manage before the darkness takes you.
Heva looks down at your broken, bloody face in her lap, her fingers shaking as she reaches out a hand and runs it through your hair. “Oh, baby,” she murmurs, her voice choking on the words. You try to smile up at her, to tell her everything’s okay, but you can’t seem to move the right muscles. She leans down and presses a kiss to your forehead, your blood smearing on her lips. “Go to sleep. I will be with you soon.” You think you see madness in her eyes as the world goes black.
Milo grips your arms hard enough to bruise, and the cry you let out makes him hold you even harder. “You can’t die here!” he shouts into your face, shaking you and pressing your bloodied body against the hardness of his chain mail. “You told me you’d live forever! You said so!” It’s just like him to bring up a childhood promise in your last moments; you can feel tears building on the edges of your lashes. His body convulses against yours and you hear a wail leave his lips as your eyes close for the last time.
Cassia has tears streaming down her face as she presses it into your chest, resting her ear over your heart. Her trembling fingers grasp at your bloody clothing; you reach up and gently rest your hands over hers—it’s all you can do with your limited strength. Quietly, she sobs against you. She’s always used her actions to show you how she’s truly felt, and in this moment it’s no different. You can feel the weight of her loss even as she listens to your heart sputter into silence. You tell her you’re sorry as the light leaves your eyes.
