Belphegor hated waking up every day to go to RAD and spend a boring and uneventful day there, not being able to just stay in his room and sleep all day. But he hated waking up even more when he wasn’t feeling well and just knew from the moment he regained consciousness, that today is going to be a shit day. And this day was just like that.
Demons haven’t gotten sick that often, but they were far away from immune, so it was really a matter of time for Belphie to come down with something. And it looked like fate decided today was the perfect day to be sick. Now, normally Belphie hated admitting if he felt sick but luckily Beel was always there for him to notice if he was running a fever or suffering from a cold, but this time his twin wasn’t in their room. He must’ve overslept, the others were probably already having breakfast and getting ready for school. But Belphegor’s head was aching and the word seemed mercilessly cold past his blankets, every inch of the demon begging him to stay in bed all day and just sleep. Sleep until this uncomfortable sick feeling disappeared from his body.
‘Belphie!’ One of his brothers burst into the room, but even from the sound of his steps Belphegor could tell it wasn’t Beel, so when Mammon stuck his grinning head in the door, Belphegor wasn’t even surprised. ‘It’s time to wake up~! ‘
‘Why the hell are you screaming…?’
Even Belphie was surprised at how horse his voice sounded and he tried to clear his throat a few times but it wasn’t helping. His older brother though hasn’t seemed to notice it.
‘Lucifer said he covers one of my bills if I get to weak ya’ up, so sorry buddy, but I’m not gonna let you sleep any longer!’
Welp that explains it. And to even further prove the weight of his words, Mammon walked in, and with an aggressive move, he snatched the blanket off Belphegor. Belphie had been right, it was deadly cold outside of his soft blanket. He probably haven’t hated anyone better than his brother at the moment but he couldn’t curse at him as a sudden cough made him choke on his words.
‘You missed breakfast so you better hurry up before you’re late from class too!’
Great. Not only he was feeling shit, but he also had no choice other than to go to school. Since being the weakest of the brothers Belphegor hasn’t really had a chance to fight back and right now he also hasn’t had the strength to do it. And Mammon was too blinded by the promise of money to even notice how ill his little brother was feeling. Belphegor could’ve told him that he was sick, but of course, he was too stubborn to do that.
‘Where’s Beel?’ Fuck, his throat was hurting so bad…
‘He’s already at RAD. He has morning practice today.’
‘Oh right…’
‘Now hurry up! You’re already late.’
‘I’m doing it, just get out!’
So Beel’s not here and Belphie probably won’t see him through the day, they haven’t shared any classes today. So it wasn’t a possibility to just go to him and wait for his twin to notice how sick he felt and Mammon was too oblivious to realize anything. Belphegor hated to admit if he ever felt unwell, but in the meantime was longing for a soft touch or a kind look. Only if they were here…
Getting ready was whole torture, everything in his body was fighting against him like his joints were on fire every time he moved and Belphie legit had to stop for a few minutes to catch his breath and rest with his head between his arms. He was so not ready for this hell of a day. Maybe he should just go to one of his other brothers and if he was lucky enough they’ll notice his illness.
The first target was Leviathan since they shared the first period. It was only thanks to luck that Belphegor haven’t passed out on the way to RAD, his legs were shaking and he was wheezing when he arrived to class, only having the strength to collapse on his seat and lay on the table as the class started. He wished to fall asleep again, to escape this painful day but when he needed it the most, the sweet relief of dreams wouldn’t come and find him. The teacher’s voice became background noise as the sick demon tried to cough loud enough for Levi to notice him, but not loud enough for the teacher to scold him. But Levi was busy enough with his game under the table.
‘Leviathan…!’ only a horse whisper, but it caught his brother’s attention which caused Levi to almost die in the videogame.
‘What?’
Belphie was silent for a second.
‘Nothing…’
‘Then don’t disturb me! I’m trying to beat my high score.’
‘Belphegor, Leviathan, no talking!’
And so Belphie just laid his face down on the table and were waiting for the slow time to pass and then drag himself to the next classroom.
His next target was Satan. Their mutual hatred for Lucifer brought the two brothers even closer in the past, so he was Belphegor’s best hope right after Beel. But almost the second he set his foot in the class, the fourth born rushed past next to him, almost causing Belphie to lay flat on the cold floor. If his brother haven’t turned back and grabbed his arms, Belphie would’ve had a very unwelcoming meeting with the tiles under his legs. The youngest demon hasn’t even had the strength to keep himself up and Satan must have noticed it because he actually stopped for a second and looked back at his younger sibling.
‘Belphegor, are you alright? You look unusually pale.’
Belphie wanted to shake his head, to say no, to tell Satan he felt horrible and wanted to pass out right there and then but the words stopped at his tongue, and not even a slight cough would come out of him. His body was terrified of admitting to being the weakest again so it just nodded.
‘Yeah, I just haven’t slept well.’
No, that is not true! Please Satan, don’t believe me! Look at me and notice me!
‘Alright then.’
But when he needed him the most, Satan wouldn’t take on the little signs that Belphie was showing him and couldn’t put the whole picture together.
‘Where…where are you going?’ fuck talking hurt so much, he had to swallow a few times to lessen the sharp pain in his throat.
‘I’ve been asked to help in with some research so I’m heading to the library.’
‘So you won’t be in class?’
‘No, I’m missing my classes today. But I really have to go now, there are people waiting for me.’
‘Right…’
It’s alright. Well actually no, nothing was alright, but Belphie still had Asmo in this class. Not his best option, but still better than Lucifer. He’d rather pass away between the desks than go to him. Sure, a simple cold or flu wasn’t deadly for demons but Belphie felt like dying nonetheless.
At this point, Belphegor’s head was throbbing and his nose was stuffed, making the breathing harder and the coughing worse. And he was quite sure his fever has risen since the morning as he couldn’t stop shivering, even in the layers of his coat. Belphie was getting so tired of this one sided game, so when he finally sat down and after a harsh cough, he turned to Asmo.
‘Do you have a tissue?’
His brother looked at him with a weird mass of concern and disgust as he studied through Belphie, who wasn’t exactly happy with this look.
‘You look like shit.’
‘That was not what I asked Asmo!’ he was so fucking irritated and tired! Why can’t anyone just fucking notice him?! Where’s Beel when he needs him…
‘Well shit, you don’t have to yell. Here, take it.’
Asmo must have realized how sick he was and even scooted a little further away from him which made Belphie just sigh. Right, Asmo won’t be any help either. So Belphie just blew his nose out or tried so, but the mess wouldn’t clean up. No matter how many tissues he used up, no matter how sore his nose was already, he still couldn’t breathe properly and the used tissues were only gathering on his desk. The non-stopping nose blowing triggered another coughing fit and the class was filled with his noise.
‘Belphegor, a little bit quieter if you can.’
Quieter? He was literally dying over there and they dare to ask him to be quiet?! He was forced to come in in the first place, he hasn’t asked to be sick and mainly not to suffer a whole fucking day in here! The frustration made his throat narrow and he choked on his voice as he could only look up at the teacher with furious and teary eyes. Belphegor wanted to go home so fucking badly, but before that, murder everyone in this room. Sadly neither of his ideas was manageable at the moment.
He just wanted to sleep. To forget everything and to not feel anything. It’d have been so much easier just to sleep and then wake up when he’s better but the pain, the cold rushes, and the cough haven’t left him. This sure was the longest fucking class of his life, every minute feeling like an eternity as if reality was trapped in this place and time flew like thick honey, not letting him escape. So when it was finally over, Belphegor hasn’t even realized, until somebody shake him and heard the words.
You should go and see Lucifer…
At this point, Belphegor wasn’t even sure if somebody actually said it or he was just hallucinating things but he had to agree with the strange words. He couldn’t go through this day, no matter how hard he tried. He needed to be back home and just lay in his bed until everything passed. Belphie forced himself to get up and with weak knees and sweat dripping from his face, he made his way to the Student Council Room. Where else could have been his oldest brother be?
He was lucky no one else was in the room when Belphegor stepped in – understand: almost fall through – the door, so Lucifer could almost immediately notice him and catch his falling brother midair. As if his legs finally give out, Belphie stumbled on the floor, Lucifer helping him down so he wouldn’t hit himself too hard.
‘Belphegor, what has gotten into you?’ although Lucifer sounded somehow irritated, he was actually concerned for his youngest brother collapsing on the doorsteps. Belphie wanted to snap back at him, telling him that it was his fault that he had to go to class and that of course it take him almost passing out before somebody finally notice him, but he couldn’t talk just yet. The harsh cough felt like stabbing iron in his lungs and he curled on himself. It only took a second for Lucifer’s hand to appear on his forehead. ‘You’re burning up.’
Lucifer took his gloves off and now his unbelievably cool fingers were pressed on Belphie’s soaked skin which made the boy let out a relieved sigh. If only for a moment, he could lean into his brother’s touch and just accept it.
‘You’re running a very high fever, why haven’t you come here sooner?’
‘Because I thought… I thought the others would notice it…’
There were actual tears forming in his eyes now, the fever wrecking his nerves and emotions, his shaking hand only being able to cling onto Lucifer’s coat. He felt like throwing up as Lucifer brushed the wet stings of hair out of his face.
‘So you’re telling me none of your brothers noticed that you were this sick?’
Belphegor just shook his head and after a few mumbled words Lucifer stood up but was immediately pulled back by his youngest brother. Belphie was looking at him tired, sad, and desperate as something finally broke inside of him and the words formed on his lips.
‘Don’t leave me here… I don’t feel good, please, pay attention to me.’
There. He said it. The delirious words were burning his mouth, but now nothing hurt more than his sickness, so he couldn’t stop the pleading.
‘I’m not leaving you here. We need to go home, I can’t allow you to stay here for any longer in this condition.’ Lucifer crunched back next to the sick demon and tried to pull him back to his feet, but Belphegor wouldn’t stand up and just shook his head.
‘Too dizzy.’
Lucifer stayed crouching down for a little, thinking about what to do next, but after a short time, his hands were under Belphie’s arms and on his waist, supporting almost all of his weight as Lucifer managed to pull him up. Belphie managed to do a few shaking, but actual steps before promptly passing out.
When he came to, Belphie was laying in a bed, a wet towel on his head and a glass full of water pressed to his lips. He didn’t think, just drink the water before trying to open his eyes and look around. He was in the attic, he knew that much, the long months he had to spend here made every crack of the bed a vivid memory in his brain. But still, it was somehow a comforting place to be after RAD.
‘You’re awake, good.’
‘Lucifer…?’
‘Yes?’
‘Did you… Did you bring me here?’
‘Yes. With a little bit of help, but yes. You passed out at RAD and I couldn’t leave you there.’
‘Right…’
‘I thought the attic would be a good place for you to rest because the others won’t bother you here. I hope it’s alright…’
‘Yeah, whatever.’ Belphie coughed as he turned his face away, burying it into a pillow. He was actually quite glad to be here, the quiet ambiance making him feel safe and sleepy here.
‘You should rest a bit. I’ll come and check up on you soon.’
‘Mhm…’
Belphegor haven’t looked up but a strange comfort appeared in his chest at the fact that Lucifer was there. Still, even after everything, his oldest brother was the one who always took care of him and the soft touch on his forehead and his comforting presence brought back these feelings. For a moment everything was alright and then Belphegor finally fall asleep.
