Mac, Jack, and Riley are on an observe-and-report mission when Jack finds Mac upchucking in an alley. Food poisoning is the worst.

Written for Day 2 of Cairo Day 2025: Improvise (I finished a work I started 3 years ago to the day, so it was probably for a Cairo Day prompt back then.)

Things were going well.  Too well.  Jack's head was on a swivel, looking out for danger as he worried about how easy their observe-and-report mission had been so far.  This was the first one since they'd been disavowed in the Netherlands, so Jack had reason to be concerned.

"Looks like the meet's over," Riley said as she hit a few keys on the keyboard.  "Video is saved and uploading to Phoenix now."  

Jack looked over his shoulder from the driver's seat to where she sat in the back, surrounded by computer monitors.  "So, it's done?"

"It's done," she confirmed.  "Where'd Mac go?"

"Said he was getting snacks, but that was," Jack looked at his watch, "more'n thirty minutes ago.  He's probably trying to find that frou-frou sparkly drink you like."

"Kombucha isn't sparkly, Jack.  It's barely sparkling, and it has a lot of health benefits.  You should try it."

"You've been spending too much time with Bozer."  Jack scoffed as he stepped out of the van.  The usual SoCal sunshine was hidden behind a layer of clouds, so he didn't bother to grab his sunglasses.  The mini-mart they had been visiting was on the next block, so Jack headed that way, keeping an eye out for anything amiss.

WIP Wednesday 4/12

I'm working on a 5 Times fic wherein Mac has migraines and different people take care of him. This is from the kid!Bozer section:

Bozer glanced at the empty seat to his left and wondered where Mac was.  He'd seen his best friend at lunch, but Mac had never shown up for Math.  It was one of his favorite subjects, and it was unlike him to miss any class. 

Then again, Mac had spent most of lunch with his head down, and the hood of his sweatshirt pulled over his eyes.  He hadn't even eaten anything.  While Mac didn't have a huge appetite, he usually ate like half of what was on his tray.

Bozer raised his hand and asked for a bathroom pass.  He figured that Mac was somewhere in the school, and this would give him a chance to look for him.

He checked Mac's locker because he'd been stuffed in there more times than Bozer could count, the science lab that was empty this period, and the gym in case Mac was trying to make indoor lightning again, but Mac wasn't in any of those spots.  Bozer bit his lip and started checking the bathrooms between the gym and their Math class.

WIP Wednesday 5/31

Happy Wednesday! I've lost all track of days this week and thought it was Tuesday. Here's a bit more of the 'Mac has food poisoning' story from the good old WIP folder.

They hit some traffic between downtown and Mac's house, and Mac had to use the vomit bag a couple of times.  Jack wished he could get out and direct traffic through a tricky intersection. 

Instead, he texted Matty to let her know that Mac was sick and that he wouldn't be in the next day.  She texted back a thumbs up, so he set his phone aside and mentally ran through his first aid knowledge about food poisoning and vomiting.  There were some things he'd need to gather once they got to Mac's house.

As soon as Riley parked the van in Mac's driveway, Jack hopped out so he could help Mac inside.  It was slow going, but he finally got Mac sitting on the edge of his bed.

"Is there a thermometer in the bathroom or do I need to go get the one we hide from you so you don't use it in an experiment?"

"Yes," Mac replied, closing his eyes and leaning forward with his arms wrapped around his stomach. 

"It wasn't a yes or no question," Jack grumbled as he set a small trash can at Mac's feet. Then, he reluctantly left Mac's side to go into the kitchen and pull the secret thermometer out from behind the silverware drawer organizer.  It was their fourth hiding place, and the most successful one so far.

Jack knew something was wrong with Mac, but he couldn't figure out what it was for the life of him.  There were signs, though, and Jack was slowly piecing those together.

Mac was always kind of quiet, or at least less talkative than Jack, but today he was practically non-verbal.  He responded to Jack's chatter with grunts or grumbles that were vaguely affirmative or dissident.

He liked to twist a paperclip or random piece of equipment in his hands.  Hell, Jack had watched him disassemble and reassemble the same damn flashlight six times in one day.  Today, his hands were still.

His eyes were always open wide, head on a swivel, watching for the next IED to disarm in this godforsaken desert.  Today, he was squinting out the window, almost as if staring into space.

WIP Wednesday 5/3

Happy Wednesday, Friends! Here's a little Foster Mac fic that I'm working on for a late Cairo Day entry. It's my on-going challenge to write all the Cairo Day fics from POVs that are not Mac or Jack, so this one is from Diane's POV.

Diane knocked softly on Mac's door and waited a minute before quietly opening it.  He was sleeping, curled around his pillow with the covers pulled almost over his head.  Congested snores made her frown as she moved closer and pressed the back of her hand against his forehead.

Mac startled awake and jerked away from her.  "Wha-?"  The word was cut off by a deep cough that left him winded.

Diane sat down on the edge of his bed and rubbed his back gently.  "That doesn't sound good.  Can I take your temp?"

He nodded, and she slipped the tympanic thermometer into his ear.  It took a few seconds for it to beep.  The numbers were black in front of a glowing green backlight.  103.2.

"It's pretty high, Mac.  I think it's time to see a doctor."

"No, please," he whispered, which seemed to be as loud as his voice could go.  

It broke Diane's heart that he was upset by the mere mention of a doctor.  She wished Jack was here.  Mac responded so much better to him than to her.  But he was at a work conference in Cleveland and wouldn't be back for a couple more days.

WIP Wednesday

I'm trying to get back to my H/C Bingo card now that the Cold Open Challenge is done.

By the time they got back to the van, Mac and Jack were both sweating, and Mac was barely moving under his own power.  Jack eased him up into the van and encouraged him to lay down on the floor.

Riley turned from where she was now sitting in the passenger seat and asked, "What's going on?"

"Found him tossing his cookies in an alley."

Mac moaned at the mention of cookies, and Jack reached over to pat his shoulder gently.

"Does your stomach hurt on the right side?"   Jack's hands hovered Mac's abdomen while he waited for an answer.

"Appendix was removed when I was eight," Mac mumbled, knowing what Jack was getting at.

Jack looked over to Riley.  "Can those things grow back?"

She was perplexed and slowly shook her head.  "I don't think so."
