Giving me all the feels
Singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer FRASE has captured both ears and heart with his fine single The Weight, our first introduction to the Canadian talent who’s been a mainstay back at home for several years now. The Weight also features Mumbai producer SICKFLIP as a guest. It’s a smooth soulful yet percussive shuffling beauty, brimming with lush choppy layers of chimes, synths, and bass. For a song named The Weight, it’s quite the weightless cross between electro pop and ambient future beats, kind of like TOKiMONSTA’s heady soundscapes paired with Odesza’s ethereal, drum florid compositions. “The Weight” is about a man who looks back at his past relationships and feels the burden of remorse about how he has treated women and was inspired by the artists journey to India.
The lyrics for this song had been circling in my head for a while before I had the chance to record it. While touring in India in 2014, I met with a local producer based in Mumbai called Sickflip. We got together at his studio with the intention of working on a track together and I showed him my ideas for “The Weight” on the piano. He knew immediately it was the track he wanted to collaborate on.
