TV Catchphrase of the Day (6/8/11)
I’ll tell ya what I’m gonna do . . . – Announcer Sid Stone on The Milton Berle Show, AKA Texaco Star Theater (1948–51).
In his official capacity, Stone served as Texaco’s commercial spokesman on Berle’s show; however, he soon became part of the act. A typical Stone bit would have him center stage as a fast-talking carnival barker, hawking products out of his portable display case. This line was used to entice an unseen customer to buy products based on the kinds of discounts and incentives he gave them. One typical scene might have Stone asking, “You don’t think it’s worth five bucks? Awright, I’ll tell ya what I’m gonna do, and, friends, you’re going to thank me . . . I’ll throw in this lovely watch.” Sometimes a little boy (played by Kenny Shapiro) would come up to Stone, to which he always sniped, “G’way kid, ya bodderin’ me.” Eventually, usually halfway through his pitch, Stone would again be interrupted—this time by a beat cop who would shoo Stone off the stage with his whistle.
