Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of comparisons between these two relationships, I guess due to the common theme of retrieving the one who’s the “soul” of the group. And so while I see where this comparison comes from, I believe it quite misguided to equate them, for some of the reasons listed under the cut:
1. Age: Gintoki was a child when Shouyou, an adult, found him and basically adopted him as a son. While in Hijikata and Kondo’s case, some months ago they were Officially Confirmed to be 27 and 28 respectively [x]. Even if we didn’t have this information, fact remains that Kondo and Hijikata were both teenagers and so pretty much on the same emotional and maturity level when they met. Kondo didn’t pick up a kid from the streets, he invited another boy like him to join the dojo were he trained. In their first flashback together in ch116, soon after Kondo brought him to the dojo, they get into trouble and end up fighting back to back. Their relationship has always been that of equals.
2. Father figure: People who see Kondo as this to Hijikata are honestly goddamn blind. First there’s of course the one year age gap, and second there is the whole Baragaki arc. Baragaki arc one of the several things it did was place Hijikata as Tetsu’s brother figure, and dwell in Hijikata’s own brother/father figure and the impact he had in his life. Baragaki arc shows us how Hijikata went rogue and became a ‘baragaki’ because like Gintoki, he, in a way, failed to protect his family too. Tamegorou was the Shouyou to Hijikata, the one that when Hijikata was an actual kid, picked him up and gave him a family and a place to be.
3. Real history: While this is a more abstract point, since Gintama’s characters as we know, most of the time don’t really follow on their real life counterparts, fact remains that Kondou Isami and Hijikata Toshizo in all resources online, are said to have had an incredible companionship (Hijikata called him Kat-chan). They were said to complement each other and to regard each other in great value. You can read about it [here and here] or [here and here]. There used to be a couple of videos with some scenes of them from the Shinsengumi! TV series on YT that showed pefectly the kind of relationship they had, which was in no way the one Shouyou and Gin shared. EDIT: There’s actually the entire drama on YT you can hear Hijikata calling Kondo Kat-chan on min 27:55
4. Hijikatas motivation: Now one last issue I would like to adress is the reason why Hijikata is in the Shinsengumi. In ch532 Hijikata explains how he has finally accepted the Shinsengumi and Edo as his home. Before of that, his home were Kondo and Sougo, it was the Shinsengumi. From the very beggining, ch15 more exactly, Hijikata makes clear that who he follows is not the Shogunate but Kondo. Because he believes in him, bcause Hijikata believes in their common cause which is to help people, as Hijikata explains in ch369, and Kondo in ch483.
It is also noteworthy to look at how Sorachi writes about Kondo and Hijikata. Like in Kondo’s bg arc where Hijikata is the one friend Kondo has by his side, or how they hang out together like in ch182 or 187, or how they are usually set up as Sougo’s tutor figures. Kondo and Hijikata are the Commander and Vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, two friends and adults who trust in each other, respect each other and stand back to back in the battlefield.
