The old bridge over the Sigatoka River on the south side of Viti Levu, Fiji, was destroyed during a hurricane in 1994. A new bridge opened in 1997. The road along the river's left bank provides access to a farming area known as "Salad Bowl Valley".

Due to strong currents and waves, swimming off the beach is not recommended at Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park southwest of Sigatoka, Fiji. A popular surfing spot is at the mouth of the Sigatoka River a few kilometers east.

Over millennia sediments carried been down the Sigatoka River and blown back to create the massive dunes of Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park on southern Viti Levu, Fiji.
