“Like, I don’t expect to ever have to take a bullet for you, but I would.” // “Wait, let me walk you home.” // “Stay behind me.”
“Like, I don’t expect to ever have to take a bullet for you, but I would.”
Caitlyn looked up at Dell almost instantly. No one ever told Caitlyn they would take a bullet for her. Even though she wasn’t positive Dell would, it was nice she even tried to convince her of the idea. There were times when Caitlyn doubted how Dell felt about her. She didn’t understand how someone like Dell ended up liking her. Dell was like an angel that God sent down to earth to check up on everything. Caitlyn was not deserving of her – not in the least bit. “I wouldn’t want you to take a bullet for me. If you did I’d be pissed actually.” She said in a serious tone of voice. “I would never be able to live with myself if you lost your life trying to keep me safe. I wouldn’t be able to live without you around.” Caitlyn realized she was beginning to sound cliche, but she couldn’t help it. She never thought she would see the day where she turned into a hopeless romantic. “I know that sounds crazy because obviously I was able to live without you before I met you, but..” She trailed off, shaking her head. “I don’t think I was really living before I met you.”
“Wait, let me walk you home.”
Caitlyn was beginning to turn and walk the opposite way, assuming their night of hanging out was over. To be honest, Caitlyn was a little worried of wondering the streets all by herself. Especially with it being late at night. Even though her pride was telling her to reject Dell’s offer of walking her home, she just couldn’t. She wanted to spend more time with the girl and she didn’t want to walk home alone. A small smile crept onto her lips. “Alright, but don’t walk super slow like you normally do.” She joked. She kept her head hanging low so she could hide her smile. She feared giving herself away. It was getting harder for her to bury her feelings though. The more time they spent together, the more Caitlyn was feeling for her. Dell was unlike anyone she ever met before, it intrigued her. Caitlyn couldn’t tell if she was genuinely interested in Dell or if she was just interested in the new, exciting things Dell had been showing her. What she did know was that she felt slightly empty when Dell wasn’t around. “Hey – why don’t you spend the night at my place tonight?” She finally looked over at her. “We can have a sleepover type of thing. You ever have one of those?” She cocked an eyebrow, smiling a bit.
“Stay behind me.”
Caitlyn rolled her eyes and pushed Dell’s arms out of the way. She was getting tired of Dell treating her like she was a child. Caitlyn was fully capable of taking care of herself. She didn’t need Dell to take care of her. She didn’t need anyone to take care of her. The reason she moved away from her parents was to get away from people who were trying to treat her like a child. “I’m not going to stay behind you. You think just because you’re taller you’re better?” She rolled her eyes. She was also tired of being underestimated because of her height. She took self-defense classes and learned quite a bit from them. Being short even had some advantages. “I don’t need you protecting me. I can take care of myself.” Caitlyn said in an irritated tone of voice.

“It’s cute that you tried to protect me and all, but you’re like a foot shorter than me, you know?” // “I don’t want to put you in that type of environment.” // “I don’t know what I would do if something happened to you.”
“It’s cute that you tried to protect me and all, but you’re like a foot shorter than me, you know?”
Caitlyn’s face scrunched up as she turned to look at Dell. “I’m not a foot shorter than you,” she refrained from tilting her head to look up at her and instead used her eyes to make it seem like their height difference was less dramatic. “and when I wear heels I am about the same height as you, so.” She shrugged her shoulders. “I just didn’t want anything to happen to you.” Her lips turned into a frown. She couldn’t help but worry about Dell, she knew she shouldn’t worry about her. Dell had been on the streets for years, she knew how to take care of herself. Caitlyn still worried for her though, worried one day something too big for Dell to handle would happen. “I know I may not be the strongest, or the tallest, – or even the smartest. But I’d do anything I could to protect you.” She was too embarrassed to look at Dell. She hated that she wasn’t able to be more of a help when it came to dangerous situations, she wanted to protect Dell because she didn’t want to lose her. “Even if it meant getting myself hurt, I would do it for you. I couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you and I didn’t even at least try to save you.”
“I don’t want to put you in that type of environment.”
Caitlyn couldn’t help but to roll her brown eyes. Her arms remained crossed over her chest. “You know you’re becoming just like my parents, right? You know, the people I tried to get away from?” After being away from her parents for so long and not being sheltered, she realized how much she was missing out on. There were so many things that Caitlyn was unaware of. Hell, she didn’t even know homeless people were a real thing before meeting Dell. There were parts of the world her parents kept hidden from her and now that she was on her own, she wanted to be able to learn about those things. “You’re not forcing me to do anything I don’t want to do. You’re not making me uncomfortable. I want to be there, so stop worrying about it.” Her voice was filled with irritation. She was not going to allow anyone else to hold her back from experiencing new things. “I am a big girl and I can take care of myself. If you’re worried about having to take care of me then stop. I’m fine on my own.” She pushed past Dell and walked off.
“I don’t know what I would do if something happened to you.”
Caitlyn let out a light laugh and shook her head. “Nothing’s going to happen to me.” She looked Dell in the eyes. A smile slowly made its way onto her lips as she looked into the girls deep brown eyes. “What would happen?” She hated seeing Dell worry about her so much. There were other things Dell needed to worry about, she shouldn’t be wasting so much of her time focusing on Caitlyn. “I’m okay, I’m safe. You gotta stop worrying so much. You’re gonna drive yourself crazy.” She laughed. She grabbed a hold of her hand and rubbed the palm of her hand. “Let’s just lay down and watch some movies, okay? I’ll even let you pick what we watch.”
