In 1882, Dutch colonial administrators in Sumatra issued a formal prohibition — not against weapons, not against organized resistance, but against a martial art. Silat Harimau, the tiger-style ground-fighting system of the Minangkabau people, was declared illegal throughout the occupied territories. The colonial government had filed enough reports from their own soldiers to know what it was capable of.
