earlier today i was looking up 'pjo worldbuilding' bc i like worldbuilding and wanted to see other peoples ideas for expanding the pre existing worldbuilding, and. i saw this. take. now, i love worldbuilding. its my favorite story feature and thing to work on, ive been working on my own world for 5-6 years, and i have a good amount of stuff for it. so all in all, im pretty passionate about worldbuilding so obviously i love tolkiens world, i find it fascinating and sometimes look into it to help myself make my own world. with that being said, the take i saw today was that 'rr's worldbuilding is the best since tolkien'

when i tell you i almost threw my phone across the room. now dont get me wrong, his worldbuilding isnt bad, i find it very fun, but it. it has issues! a good amount of issues! like the gods being americanized and that whole ww2 thing (yes ik that was retconned but im still mentioning it). but the main thing about ricks worldbuilding is that he didnt make it. the thing that makes tolkiens world so beautiful and vast and incredible is because he made everything himself, the history, the geography, the languages, the religions everything. rick just. didnt do that. the world this takes place in is ours (not a bad thing in worldbuilding), the gods are preexisting, all the history is real- rick didnt make anything new. he just added some things- small things in the grand scheme of the world.
and this fucking person. said. that ricks worldbuilding was the best thats been written since tolkien.
so not only is that honestly insulting to tolkien, but its insulting to me and other worldbuilders, while also just straight up saying 'oh i dont read any fantasy aside from this one series'. like.
NRBWHDBEBSHDBHQHS YOU CANNOT COMPARE TOLKIEN AND RIORDANS WORDBUILDING. riordans worldbilding isnt necessarily bad, but tolkiens is great.
