Finger Monkey (Dwarf Silk Monkey)
The finger monkey or dwarf silk monkey is a small genus of monkey that lives in the rainforest of South America (Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia). The Finger Monkey, which holds the title of Earth’s smallest monkey, weighs just over 100 grams.
Finger monkeys mostly live in groups in numbers ranging from 2-9. The dominant male leads the group. Although groups usually occur in family members, in some cases 1-2 non-family adult monkeys may also be members of the group. Group members communicate through a complex scheme of sounds, chemicals and signs.
The lengths of the finger monkeys ‘ bodies range from 11.7 -15.2 centimeters, while the lengths of their tails, which are longer than their bodies, range from 17.2 – 22.9 centimeters. The weight of an average adult finger monkey is just over 100 grams. Their fur consists of dark brown, golden, orange, grey, white and black plumage.
This species, which can rotate its heads 180 degrees, can easily climb trees with its claw-like sharp fingernails. This species of monkey, which walks on all fours, can exceed distances up to 5 metres by leaping between branches. They live at elevations between ground level and 20 meters in trees according to the type of trees found within their habitat. They feed mostly on tree resin, other than that insects and fruits are a patchwork of their nutrition.
Finger Monkey (Dwarf Silk Monkey)
Finger monkeys do not have a specific mating period, they have twin or two separate births once a year. Finger monkeys are often monogamous.
