Movies - Ghost in the shell (2017)

I’m calling it right now: Ghost in the shell will win next oscar for best visual effects. It’s the most beautiful and gorgeous piece of cinema I have ever seen. You literally could freeze the movie at any point and make a poster or a painting from it. The world this movie presents to us is breathtaking and it feels real and lived in.

Ghost in the shell is cyberpunk gold.

It’s not only visually amazing but it gives real sense of the world, how things work within it, what it is to live in a world like that and how humanity itself changed in the course of time. Nothing feels out of place.

Story (No spoilers)

Story of the movie lands into a genre of police thrillers and does good job in telling it. The main character, Major, is the first of her kind as a shell of a human made with technology that has the only piece that really determines what the person is: human brains. Her character blurs the lines of synthetic and a real person. Major is part of Section 9 that works for the goverment as counter terrorist and anti-crime unit and the story follows their work and Major’s personal journey. It gives you a bit of thought provoking questions about consent, human rights and the sense of belonging just as giving sense of loneliness for the main character who is trying to come to terms with her own unique existense. The movie is a police thriller / action movie and the story follows the ideas from that perspective and it doesn’t dive into them with philosophical extend but instead uses them to spice things up.

The story is setup as an origin story for the character and leaves a possibility for a sequel. The movie stands on it’s own but it also builds the foundation for future movies if this is going to be turned into a series.

Music

The score of the movie is composed by Clint Mansell and Lorne Balfe. Music of the movie fit the cyberpunk world and enhanced the atmosphere. It doesn’t use the soundtrack of the original Ghost in the shell except one or two times. This is by no means a bad thing as the new musical score is really great on it’s own.

Scarlett Johansson as the Major and “the problem of whitewashing”

Major is played by Scarlett Johansson. Casting Scarlett as the Major brought up a lot of controversial issues about “whitewashing” in Hollywood. Whitewashing means that the movies present characters or stories from different culture and replaces the ethnic group it concerns by casting white actors over black, asian, muslim etc. actors. It’s something that is a real problem in movie industry but in the case of Ghost in the shell that accusation is missplaced. I repeat: Ghost in the shell (2017) can’t be blamed for it.

The whole movie is about a person that is synthetic, a shell, leaving her ethnicity out of the equation by questioning what it is to be a human in the first place if you are just a brain in a machine. The reimagination of the original movie was also green lighted by Masanori Ota, the creator of the original work, and he gave the movie his blessing as well. (Direct quote from him “What issue could there possibly be with casting [Johansson]? […] There is no basis for saying that an Asian actress must portray her.” considering the casting choice) Secondly the ones who sees the casting of Scarlett as a problem are the western people who made a big fuss about it while the japanese people who were questioned what they thought about the casting they were almost unanimously pleased with the actor choice. Whitewashing is a real problem but it isn’t presented in this movie. The movie has fairly interracial casting compared to others to be honest.

Do not get into the hate train for reasons that simply are not there. Go see the movie yourself. I hate to see it how people in general just like the most criticts hate the movie and criticise it for things that they give a free pass on anything else just because of this trend.

Scarlett’s take on Major was marvelous and it shows she cared for the character she was playing. She still proves to be a great action hero while giving us a great performance outside the action scenes as well. She manages to capture the glassed eyes for a synthetic character while showing emotion and the lack of it that is fitting for the Major’s role.

Video games - Final Fantasy XV / Final Fantasy Versus XIII

“ I did my waiting.. 10 years of it.. In Azkaban!”  -Sillyroxas / Kaboose when his preorder for Final Fantasy XV was late

Final Fantasy XV.. The most anticipated game of my life. The wait started back in 2006 when Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced and it’s first trailer was released at E3. From the first glance I fell in love with the game and looked forward to it’s release. It seemed a lot more darker, serious and it had a great setting mixing up fantasy and modern elements. The more trailers we got the more hype became to surface with intriguing story of Noctis Lucis Caelum and Stella Nox Fleuret. Two lovers on opposite sides of a war or with a promise of a romance that could never be as the two draw weapons on each other during one of the trailers. I was hooked.

But the game kept us waiting and there was times when we didn’t hear a word about it for years and rumors of the game being canceled came around.. It all was put to rest with the news of Final Fantasy Versus XIII changing it’s title to Final Fantasy XV. Now ten years later we finally have the game in our hands but was it worth the wait?

To me the answer is simple: Yes. It was worth the wait.

The game we got was a lot different than we expected or had hoped for and it had it’s flaws. The story clearly shows it was meant to be split on several games as Versus XIII was supposed to have sequels to finish the story instead of trying to tell it in a single game. Story delivered it’s main points but leaves lot to be hoped for but it still carries you through it no matter how stumbling ride it could be. It would br living in a denial to say otherwise.

Story still gives you sense of wonder, intrigue and sadness at times to give you an adventure to go through. It’s a good story even if not as filling as some have hoped for or told in the best way possible. Personally I loved the story even with it’s flaws but I can see if some of you might dislike it. Where the story did fall a bit flat, knowing the fact it was impossible to tell it in a single game as it was squeezed and cut in for this one, Final Fantasy XV shines with other aspects.

The gameplay is superb and entertaining. Fighting is grand, fast and unique compared to other games. Environments are stunning and at times even breathtaking. There was moments where my jaw dropped on the floor in awe because of what was happening on the screen. The bond between the four main characters was touching and really felt real to me. Just having this game made me cry from nostalgia as I have waited for it almost half of my life.

It’s a miracle that this game saw the day of light after being stuck in a development cycle from hell for 10 years and it delivered a great game even with it’s flaws in story which in truth was to be expected.

To me Final Fantasy XV will always be one of the greatest, and flawed, games I have ever played. It also stands as a flawed presentation of what Versus XIII could have been...

The 30 Day Resident Evil Challenge Answered in a Single Post

Day 1: Favorite RE game

Way too many games in the series.. So I name a couple! Resident evil 1 (+ Remake), 2, 3, Code Veronica and Resident Evil 7.

Day 2: Least favorite villain

Neil Fisher. But I think it’s mostly because amount of the screen time he got in Revelations 2.

Day 3: Do you like the movies? Why or why not?

Okay.. So.. Don’t rage on me. But after 10 years or more I have accepted that live action RE movies can be harmless fun even if they are total trash from the start to finish. Before I despised them but now I can take them as mindless quilty pleasure and laugh at them with my friends.

Animation movies made by Capcom.. Degenaration and Damnation were really fun even though their story telling is still on normal RE level. I’m really excited to see what Vendetta, the upcoming movie, has in store for us after enjoying the first two so much!

I really can’t tell. Resident evil 2 or Resident evil 3 at my friends house when I was a little kid. Never have run home so fast when it was dark and I thought Nemesis was onto me.

Lickers.. But if we are talking about big names: Nemesis.

Day 10: Have you read any of the books? If so, what ones?

I have never read the books but I own the Caliban Cove. I also have read the manga Marhawa Desire.

Day 11: What part in the games scared you the most?

Nemesis. Every single Nemesis encounter ever. I think the most scary part of him was how the soothing save room music was replaced by that creepy ass music of his. I have never been so afraid to leave the save room.

Alexia Ashford and Alex Wesker being the close second!

Day 13: Was there any parts in the games that made you laugh?

Voice acting and overall writing of the games in places. Barry Burton in original RE and Revelations 2, oh my god.

I prefer zombies.. But the las plagas are damn fun to fight against as well.

Excella. Her character was okay and did the job but didn’t really leave big impressions on me.

Nemesis battle at the clock tower in Resident evil 3 and Osmund Saddler from Resident evil 4.

Operation Raccoon city. Also lets not forget about the gun survivors.

Those two lines back to back from Barry Burton were FUCKING GOLD. His voice acting was on point in Revelations 2 and they really nailed his character in that game.

Simmons T-Rex moment in Resident evil 6.

I honestly have no idea and I’m too lazy to check.

Leon Kennedy from Damnation. He was fucking comedy gold in that. The poor man just wanted to have breakfast.

Day 25: What do you think is the most challenging RE game?

Code Veronica.

Day 26: Leon or Chris?

Leon. I have grown to love that goof ball he is even though Chris’s character is a lot more devopled than what Leon has. Just love his relationship with Ada way too much.

Knife. Always the knife.

Day 29: Have you cried at any parts of the games?

Steve’s death in Code Veronica, One moment in RE7 but I won’t spoil it since it’s rather new game, Resident Evil 6 when I thought Ada died and I know it’s fucking pathetic but I really did.

Resident evil 7 is AMAZING. Everyone should go and play it! I’m always in team Ashford with the villains!

Video games - The Wolf Among Us

The Wolf Among Us is a story and dialogue based video game created by Telltale games. It’s based on the Fables comics which tells the story of all the characters who escaped from the world of fairy tales and ended up in our world, to Fabletown, to the city of New York.

The game is split up in five episodes and each of them lasts from one and half to two hours. You can buy either one episode to try the game without paying that much and decide if you like it or not and later buy the rest of the episodes. You can also buy “Season pass” which gives you all the episodes of The Wolf Among Us.

You play as Bigby, the big bad wolf, and the sheriff of Fabletown. I loved the character so much in the game and the voice acting in The Wolf Among Us was remarkable. The game circles around a murder case which keeps surprising you to the very end and it reminded me a lot of old Noire films. I can’t really tell about the plot without spoiling it so I leave it to that. Even when the game is as bizarre as it sounds with the fairy tale characters living in our world it still manage to tell a touching and rather dark story which feels real. Characters struggle with real life problems and you are there to help them if you can. The Wolf Among Us is a great mystery and crime story and I recommend it to everyone who likes those things.

Video games - Morrowind

One of the first xbox and roleplaying games I ever played is the elders scrolls 3: Morrowind. The game itself is rather old, released back in 2002 by Bethesda softworks, but it still holds a special place in the hearts of gamers and it’s argued to be the best game in the elders scrolls series.

Morrowind was one of the biggest open world roleplaying games at it’s time. The game is placed in island called Morrowind and it has got two DLCs (Bloodmoon and Tribunal) to expand it’s world even further. It managed to capture you in it’s game world and it won’t stop to amaze me even after 14 years later.

The atmosphere and beauty of the game still holds and make you wonder what is ahead of you. The wolrd has so much detail in it that it managed to create a real feeling of a new world. Story and the writing is far beyond compared to later storylines with the new entries in the series. Soundtrack is really memorable and can give you a nostalgia trip with few notes from the main theme. I truly love the whole experience the Morrowind offers you.

One of the best things in Morrowind is how it plays out. How your every skill counts and how complex it is compared to many other games. The game mechanic made so much more possible and even dared the player to exploit it. How about making a magic ring that will let you levitate for ever? How would you feel to have a spell that let’s you jump thousands of miles? Create your own spell of mass destruction that kills everything in 100 metres? All that could be done and it was up to player to make it all happen. Morrowind was truly a game worthy to be called a sandbox.

Alright.. So if anyone have noticed I have been away from tumblr for a quite sometime now. It’s because of I hadn’t got to around play the latest episodes of the Resident evil Revelations 2 and I’m afraid to be spoiled what might happen. Now that I finally got time I ran into a bug that prevents me from playing them.. I will be back once I have it fixed and played those through but until then I’m staying out of here~

Roleplaying and being a game master is fun and all.. But sometimes I just wake up to my story arcs and I'm just in awe of terror. "Did I seriously just plan this? This is so f*cked up and sick." It's not that it's bad roleplay plot, I already know it's brilliant but why I can't come up with something happy and cute for a chance like I had Monty Python comedy rpg a year back.. :C
