James was on the brink of sleep. It was difficult to drift off the older he got but that was just an effect of early middle age, wasn’t it? Of course it could have something to do with the heavy burdens that now rested on his shoulders, or the horrors that the years had filled his adult years, but whatever the reasons were now inconsequential considering the result was the same. 1am and restless.
Sleep was at last calling. And then it wasn’t.
The familiar buzz of his phone jerked him from the brink and James groaned in frustration. Why didn’t he put it on silent? Rolling over, he reached down to where it was charging on the floor and tapped the screen on to see the familiar name.
Suddenly Silver’s face was flashing up on his screen as an incoming call. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. He could hardly ignore it now considering John knew he was awake and looking at his phone. That would just be rude.
“Yeah?” he murmured into his phone, voice cracked from the promise of sleep.
“Did I wake you up?” John asked loudly down the phone. In the background, James could hear a busy street still bustling.
“Yeah,” he answered, letting out a single dry laugh, quiet. “What’s wrong.”
“Nothing. Just missed the sound of your voice, obviously!”
James rubbed his eyes. “Saying that isn’t funny when it’s not clear if you’re actually serious or not.”
“You know me, never serious about anything.”
“Is there actually a point to this phonecall, John?”
There was a beat of silence before Silver answered, false in his cheeriness. “Not really.”
“Because I’ve got to be up early in the morning...”
“Say no more! I’ll let you get back to sleep. Or whatever you’re doing.”
James suppressed a sigh, feeling a pang of guilt although he didn’t really need to. After all, it was Silver who had decided to ring him past midnight. Then again, it was James who hadn’t called him in weeks. “Sleep, I can assure you. Before you go though... come up next week, if you can. It’s been a while.”
Another moment of silence passed before Silver answered. “I’ll see if I can get two days off together for once. Then I’ll come up.Want me to bring anything?”
James swallowed. “No thanks. I’ve got- uh, whatever we need.”
On the other end of the phone John let out a short laugh. “You old romantic. Night.”
“Night. Stay safe.”
“Always do, old man.”

#5 is definitely headcanon for me now.
flint it too observant not to notice how intelligent and manipulative and protective and hard-working and strong silver is. he is too observant not to notice how much silver has grown, from a terrible person to a person whose terribleness fits perfectly with his own.
and silver’s memory is too fucking to have forgotten that captain “they’d eat it raw if left to their own devices” flint is actually fucking hilarious, but no one else seems to realize this, including flint himself. and silver would happily spend the rest of his life trying to make flint tell another joke again

bless you for your summer lovin, everyone being negative as fuck about it is so frustrating, i need some sun and warmth or ill legit die <3 and im glad to hear that about the nephew, sounds like a little trooper <3 <3
God, right? I suppose it makes sense if you’re from a country that’s hot as balls, but some of us need some summer to thaw out or stop us losing toes to trench foot. Plus, gotta take a brief break from that sweet seasonal depression.

this is so funny to me as a finn, we hardly ever use they/theirs (we have a gender neutral term) but instead call everyone “it”
