Everyone knows about Georgia Aquarium's whale shark, but my favorite animal at the aquarium is actually the tiger shark!

There have been reports of territorial behavior in silvertip sharks, and they are usually encountered alone or in pairs.

Today's shark is the silvertip shark!

The basics: a large, active, and powerful species of requiem shark, the silvertip shark (Carcharhinus albimarginatus) has a wide but patchy distribution around offshore islands and reefs throughout tropical regions of the Indian and Pacific oceans. They tend to outcompete similarly-sized requiem sharks due to their bulk, persistence, and tendency to be aggressive. Silvertip sharks are bold, and have been noted to be territorial sharks.

Conservation status: vulnerable. Silvertip sharks are a slow-reproducing species, and overfishing (including by pelagic fisheries for their fins) has lead to local population loss.

Today's fun fact: silvertip sharks could absolutely pose a threat to humans thanks to their size and boldness, though to date all bite incidents with these sharks are provoked. Silvertip sharks have a distinctive threat display - when they feel threatened, they will pretend to charge, and then will open their mouths and "shiver" to emphasize the white points on their fins.

Silvertips tend to prefer warm, shallow waters, although older individuals are often found deeper.

Silvertip sharks will run their prey up against reef surfaces before devouring them.
