"Why are you wearing a backpack?" Julia asked, the next time she saw Caio at the Senbamachi climbing site.

"Because I will be wearing one for the real climb," he said. "And I want to get comfortable with the weight. It affects your balance."

Julia paused, feeling both inwardly embarrassed that she never considered wearing a backpack during training and wildly impressed with Caio Machado. "I never thought of that."

It was the first day of spring when Julia came out of the bedroom to find Caio at the front door, his backpack full and a suitcase at his side.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"The winter was long and I'm restless," he said.

"How long will you be gone?" Julia asked.

"I don't know."

“Are you coming back?”

Caio looked at the floor. “I don’t know that, either.”

"Is there anything you do know?"

"I don't want to leave you," Caio said. "But I need to go."

Julia considered asking him to change his mind, but she also wanted Caio to be her partner with his whole heart. She wouldn’t settle for anything less. She hoped he would ask her to go with him, but she wasn't about to beg. When he didn't say anything more, she let him go.

Caio was thrilled and overwhelmed by the news. Having not been there for Julia's first pregnancy and Iara's birth, he's also feeling a touch of regret and sadness that he missed so much.

"Well, now's your chance," Julia said, with a touch of wry humor in her voice. "I'll be happy to let you take care of all the diaper changes and midnight feedings."

"I will do anything that you need," he said. "I love you."
