Illustrator Feature - Simon Abbott
Today we talk to inveterate drawer & Bedfordshire illustrator Simon Abbott about his illustration style, influences and illustration collectives. He has also shared with us this fabulous Circus themed strong man illustration..
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I'm Simon. I'm an illustrator currently based in the lovely village of Harrold. I work at a booksellers (not as exciting as it sounds) during the day and in my spare time i like to draw, listen to music and visit cosy pubs. If I'm doing all three at the same time I'm a happy chappy.
How did you get into illustration?
I've always enjoyed drawing and painting and always thought of myself as a bit of a fine artist. Then I discovered the vast spectrum of illustration that is out there, along with the amazing community and I was sold. I studied illustration at university and met some like minded folk who I now illustrate alongside in the collective 'Art School Disco'.
How would you best describe your style of illustration?
I guess it's pretty commercial, and always a bit mysterious. I think it's great how patterns and colours can sweep in and out of fashion and I like to go with that. I don't think I've found a style to stick with just yet so I'm having lots of fun experimenting. To excuse this attitude I use different monikers to take ownership of my different styles!
Where do you get inspiration for your art work?
I like stories, little penguin classics with tragic characters who normally make their way onto my page. I'm not much of a planner so I tend to take inspiration from whatever is sitting in front of me or the songs I'm listening to as a starting point. I love patterns, I find patterns everywhere and take mental notes of them to use when I'm drawing. At the moment I cant stop drawing this pattern that looks a bit like snake scales!
What’s your favourite piece of work you have produced?
I'm normally most excited about what I've just been working on, in this case it's the 'mystic trip' illustrations I made last weekend and the stuff I'm working on with Art School Disco. I'm also proud of the installation of 15 birdhouses I produced last year, it was a big buzz to watch people enjoying it and interacting with it.
