April 29, 1836: Prominent frontiersman Simon Kenton dies in Zanesfield, Ohio
“Simon Kenton” <3.
"Simon Kenton's Voyage to Steal Horses" -- art by Steve White
Okay kiddies I'm back with another History rant and this time it's about a fella that all of you OHIO KIDDIES better know about because HOLY SNAP THIS GUY. THIS GUY. holy cow. Okay so this man's name is Simon Kenton. This man was known as a huge, scary, tough guy who settled a ton of the land in Ohio. What he was most renowned for however is the fact that this man ran the gauntlet NINE. TIMES. Now for those unfamiliar with the concept of the gauntlet, it's a 1/4th mile stretch of people lined up into a path armed with sticks and stones and clubs and other sharp painful objects. The runner then has to run as far and fast as he can through the gauntlet until he dies. Barely anyone survived ONE gauntlet, never mind NINE. On the sixth run he broke his arm and his collarbone. But on his ninth run he ESCAPED THE SHAWNEE. JUMPED ACROSS A CLIFF AND KEPT RUNNING. Now to the time's standards this guy was HUGE. HUGE AND TOUGH. He was known as "The Man who's gun is never empty" and was PIVOTAL in so many parts of Ohio History. Not only as a frontiersman and land owner, but a major player in some huge Ohio battles. Okay you guys have heard of Daniel Boone right? Famous frontiersman who kicks everyone's butts? YEAH? WELL KENTON SAVED HIS LIFE. TWICE. Now Simon Kenton wasn't without fault, he made his share of mistakes through Ohio's history, but there's one thing you can't deny this crazy dude. He. Was. TOUGH. Next time someone says Ohio is boring take them aside and ask them if they know any Ohio history because THAT MY FRIENDS is some of the most intense, exciting crap ever. Ohio history is INSANITY. COMPLETE. TOTAL. INSANITY. It should honestly be a movie. (technically it's already a play if you've ever heard of Tecumseh! the outdoor drama. That's also really good if you have a chance go to it, it's awesome.) (Also, I should do a history rant on Tecumseh and Blue Jacket sometime soon....) THAT WRAPS IT UP FOR ME RIGHT NOW BUT THANKS FOR READING HAVE A GREAT DAY
Simon Kenton tombstone, Urbana, Champaign County, OH
Simon Kenton was a late eighteenth century frontiersman who ran the gauntlet at several Indian villages in Ohio. His tombstone indicates some of his achievements, but the choice and placement of the motifs is unfortunate. Putting a bear's head and feather head dressed Indian on the sides as pedestal ornaments suggests they had been some of his "achievements" according to this early twentieth century real photograph postcard. At present there is a statue of Kenton on top of the tombstone, a vertical placement above the Indian which reinforces this idea.
Today I learned:
I'm related to Simon Kenton (well by marriage, but hey still pretty cool)
I have some weird unspoken desire to own all the old dishes and things in the Peddler's Mall and would if I had my own place or the money to buy them
If you put pizza sauce and mozzarella on a cold bagel it tastes like a more sufficient and filling pizza lunch-able that you can actually call dinner
New School?? I think yes..
I am so sick of Scott High School... With the new principal and what-not... I just want to try something new. I have never switched schools before in my life, so for my junior year, I am going to attend Simon Kenton High School. I think this will be good for me. Considering i know NO ONE and therefor i won't have to deal with all of the pathetic drama and/or occasional eyesight of people who i honestly can't stand to see anymore.. so, with that being said, Good-bye Hatred filled, insanely unfair Scott High, and Hello welcoming Simon Kenton. Please, be nice. :3
