Character: Simone
From: Dispatches From Elsewhere
Representation: Transgender
Their Importance: She's a well rounded character overall, with her positive attitude being contrasted by flaws such as difficulty making choices and (mostly unknowingly) pushing other people away, and since the story centers on friendship developed between the protagonists, Simone does eventually learn to let herself be happy. She could also be described as the energetic one of the team, encouraging others to follow the mysterious game that starts the whole plot.Â
She's also the love interest to Peter, the main character, and their romantic subplot is rather sweet. Simone is overall one of the few trans characters who are in healthy relationships, with her backstory being similarily handled well.Â
Despite showing her pre-transition in flashbacks, the show never misgenders or deadnames Simone. One of the staff writers was in fact a trans woman, so we can assume this is representation coming from the place of understanding (and I've seen several posts from trans women who love the way Simone was written).
