13. What's something you learned recently?

TW for discussions of sex [general, no descriptions of intercourse just, like the concept] during the middle ages

I learned recently that "sodomy" as a term during the medieval period didn't necessarily mean gay sex. It meant all physical affection not condoned by the church at the time -- and given the church at the time only condoned sex between a man and a woman for the sake of having children, "sodomy" could encompass everything from gay intercourse to sex work to a married couple just enjoying themselves etc etc etc. Sodomy didn't become associated with gay intercourse specifically until the 1400s, and according to my source [video essay on youtube with citations that I haven't yet had the chance to look up] that shift in vernacular is sudden and hard to pinpoint a straight reason for. It did, however, coincide with a decrease in "symbolic marriages" between two landed gentry of the same sex. Given the suddenness of the change, I personally think it's probably because of a popular theological text hitting the cultural zeitgeist, since the other major gender shift of the medieval period involving gender [against women, equating women to the first sin and drawing the conclusion that women have painful labor as a punishment for being the evil sex, and thus men should be allowed to treat them that way] was because of a theological book published and popularized by the church, which interpreted the gender dynamics in the bible as a punishment for Eve eating the apple. It caused a sharp left turn in how women were treated at the time, and seems pretty easily repeatable, if the church is looking for someone New And Interesting to persecute. But that's a baseless guess, and I have no proof to back that thought up.

Anyway, I digress......

3. what are you looking forward to?

Right now, I'm looking forward to my best friend and her husband and kids are coming up for an overnight visit this weekend! Part of the reason we moved to this area was to be closer to them and we're doing our best to take advantage of the proximity.

More long-term, I'm looking forward to being more unpacked and organized in our new house. We've gotten a lot done in the past month and a half, but we still have a little ways to go.

Apparently, Horseshoe crabs are so smooth to the touch because they secrete a slime for protection purposes on it! :D Get slimed idiot

16: What‘s a piece of advice you would give yourself from five years ago?

Do not start the psych bachelor. Relax. Literally follow your passion and trust in your art and social skills. You are allowed to do what you WANT to do, start detaching yourself from what you think you NEED to do. Also keep that weird fairy creature you started dating that‘s your future wife

I can't actually answer where I go for a drink locally without doxxing myself so:

5. What's your drink of choice? (Coffee/tea order, alcohol of choice, pop, etc)

During the infancy of the Starbucks Frappucino, an uncle disparagingly described them as "A caffienated milkshake" and then had to sit in a diner with the rest of my family while I excitedly explained that that's EXACTLY what I wanted. I like a nice spike of caffeine with my cream and sugar mixture.

October because that's usually when the weather is the best out here and there's still an acceptable amount of daylight.

I recently re-listened to Caravan Palace and have had "Wonderland" specifically stuck in my head.

3. What are you looking forward to right now?

In the short term! I'm going to play some video games with friends tonight, which has me pretty excited. We've been knee-deep in repo lately and its been fun!

In the long term! Next month I get to meet up with my partner again. We're visiting some museums in Virginia, where they'll be having some talks on prehistoric art. Also there's a medieval reenactment site down there with an armor collection I really want to see!
