Perhaps people in Ancient Rome lived simpler lives and simpler truths were easier to accept in their world than in our complex, legalistic world of double entendres and down-the-rabbit-hole politics.  What was done hundreds of years ago to people, which is now considered inhumane and unmistakably evil, is still being done but under the sheen of legal phrases, big government, lobbyists and corporations.  Wars and disputes aren't being fought on the streets of Ancient Rome but in the board rooms of corporations or in the Supreme Court.  How much have we really progressed?  Instead of accepting simple truths, we've continued to add unnecessary layers until what once was clear now resides in a fog of confusion, shaped intentionally or not by our increasingly complex global society.

I'll give you an example:

A number of years ago, a family friend started a charity group.  Just for fun.

Let's call it, The Good Intentions Club.

Each month, she and a group of her friends would get together for a potluck and each friend who attended would donate $25 dollars to a collection which would be taken at the end of the year and donated to a charity they all agreed upon.

For the first few months, our family friend collected the money and put into a small security box...

...which didn't last long.  Soon the group decided it would be better to put the money into a bank at the end of every month, so the money could gain interest.

More money meant more to the chosen charity.  It seemed sensible at the time.  However, it was decided a treasurer was needed.

Now that one aspect of an official organization was created, it suddenly became imperative for every person to have an official designation.  Secretary.  President.  Vice President.  The list goes on...

Soon the fighting began as to what organization they should donate the money to.  Should it be the World Wildlife Federation?  Or The Red Cross? Or a local children's hospital?  Each woman had their reasons.  A grandson who faced a devastating disease when he was a child.  One woman's relative worked for the Red Cross.  Another couldn't stand seeing animals suffer.

In the end, the group was disbanded.  Too much infighting began to jeopardize the friendships the group had created.

We went to dinner with our family friend after the final meeting of The Good Intentions Club.  Later, I found her sitting at the dining table, dumbfounded.

"Didn't we create this group to help people?  Didn't we try to do the right thing?"

Good intentions and truths are normally the foundation and basis of societies and relationships but we quickly lose track of how to keep things as simple as they were designed to be.  It really makes you worry about the human race...
