Declutter
"When things aren't adding up in your life, start subtracting." -Anon
First, we'd like to wish you a happy May! This is our first SimplifySunday post in a series of five this month that is focused on steps you can take to simplify your life. By applying some of these best practices each week, you will simplify both externally and internally so you can amplify your life. So, where do you start?
Decluttering is an easy way to create physical space. By removing unnecessary distractions, you are also creating mental space so you can focus on your passions, goals and meaningful life. Here are five pro tips for removing clutter in your life (and keeping it out!)
1. Stay organized. It may seem a little silly to organize clutter but it is important. Before you begin, decide how you want to categorize your belongings. Have a box/bag/pile for things you will keep, donate, recycle, sell or throw away. Remember to be conscious of our environment and use the "throw away" pile sparingly and only if it truly trash.
2. Have a plan. It helps to have a plan of action. Think about where you want to start and set goals for spaces to declutter each day. For example: declutter the kitchen on Monday, the bathroom on Tuesday, etc... Try to start in areas that have the least amount of sentimental items.
3. Start small. And what we mean by this is physically small things! Decluttering can be an overwhelming and lengthy process for many. There is a lot of energy and excitement when we set out on this journey but after the third junk drawer, our enthusiasm wanes. So, start small while you have the energy. Get through those drawers, shelves, boxes that tend to accumulate the random knick knacks and then move on to the bigger things. This will also help you mentally prepare for parting with some things that you may be more attached to.
4. Don't overthink. Your first instinct is your most accurate one. Try to move through your belongings quickly. This will not only save you time, but it will also prevent you from keeping things that you really don't need. When you stop to think about an item and if you really need it, you start justifying reasons to keep it. Go with your gut and move on.
5. Add consciously. This last step is to help you stay clutter free. Be intentional about the things you purchase and surround yourself with. Where is it from? How was it sourced? How does the company contribute to the greater good? For more guidance on this you can read our post, Every Purchase Matters. Also, try to adopt the "one for one" strategy. For every item you purchase, donate, sell or throw away a similar item. For example, if you buy two new shirts, donate two shirts you no longer need.
We truly hope this helps you on your journey to simplify to amplify. We would love to hear your thoughts, ideas and questions.
Happy SimplifySunday!
