Elisabeth is Now Nineteen, and she has been married for two years. Her husband spends his day on Business and politics; she is left alone with her books and thoughts. She reads poetry, travel diaries, and romantic fiction by candlelight. She begins to feel the ache of her youth slipping away.

Elisabeth stepped outside, letting the morning air wrap around her like a cool, welcoming scarf. The world smelled of pine needles, sun-warmed grass, and the faint sweetness of wildflowers waking up to the day.

The hours slipped by without permission, the sun climbing and then beginning its slow descent. Elisabeth didn’t mind. She felt lighter with every passing moment, as though the fresh air was quietly sweeping worries out of her ribcage.
