Varius is actually not supposed to be out and around people right now-- he’s supposed to be in Tartarus, as a prisoner there. A few years ago, he nearly destroyed three fairly major realms during something of a tantrum, and as a result, he was wanted for death by a vast majority of the rulers of the different realms and species. Simply because a being his age is extremely dangerous anyway, and not many people are around that can stop him reliably if he were to do such a thing again.
Fei, however, wouldn’t allow this, and Varius was instead given an ultimatum.
Be admitted to the asylum realm of Scelure for treatment, and if he was eventually passed by Aile, the ruler and one of the caregivers there, then he could reintegrate into the outside world...with stipulations, of course.
Otherwise, he would be given to whatever prison realm was best equipped to handle him...which, at the time, was agreed on to be Tartarus.
Vari chose to go to Scelure, but a few months ago, broke out. Thereby throwing away his only chance, really. The only reason he’s not being hunted right now, is because Aile never reported (and asked that the others working there that knew about Vari) that he had escaped. However, he also never passed him...telling Varius that his freedom was more or less up to him, now.
If he behaved, then it was likely that nobody would ever notice that the Setana had ever left. However, if he didn’t...Aile wouldn’t be able to protect him, because he wasn’t willing to lie and say that Vari was better when he isn’t.
For the most part, Vari has been behaving, and stays primarily in his home realm of Setia; where nobody can get to him. But he occasionally leaves to run errands for Fei, among a few other things...which obviously runs the risk of him being caught, and reported to Tartarus...
