#NationalWaffleDay: In 1904, apparently St. Louis was the happening place in America: the city hosted both the 1904 World’s Fair and the 1904 Olympics. There were over fifty ice cream vendors and more than a dozen waffle or “hotcakes” vendors combined between these two huge events, so the exact fellows’ names in particular have been lost to history, but one guy’s waffle booth was next to another guy’s ice cream stand when the ice cream guy ran out of serving cups. The waffle vendor rolled a waffle into a cone shape and saved the day by creating an edible cup to hold the ice cream, and – check it out – the ice cream cone was born (much like the delicious one seen here in our photo taken downtown today at McConnell’s). That event is why to this day, even the crummiest ice cream cones usually have a “waffle pattern” on them.
