Hey, mine and Sarah Baugh's 2013 newsprint guide project Spirit of Windsor is in this group show in Michigan, curated by Ben Gaydos. Here is the show description, it sounds pretty tight. If you are in Lansing between now and December 7, go see it!

With the decline of large scale manufacturing in post-industrial America, there is a desire by many to reclaim small scale production. The past several years has seen a rise of independent publishing across the United States with increased visibility and availability of zines and art books, and a DIY ethos which embraces exploration, technique and radical production methods. SUBSTRATE explores the politics and poetics of print in the Rust Belt, asking the viewer to think about the relationship between landscape, the material environment, and printed matter.

We drove from San Francisco to Green River Utah, and it took us five days. The van only broke down once. We camped in California three times and Nevada one time. We acquired various mascots for the dashboard, which is now looking very eccentric. We went through a whole case of sparkling water! Now we are in Green River, where it is very cold but feels like home. We're working on another publication about the town and its environs, and it's shaping up to be preeeetty interesting.

Hello! We are pleased to announce that Sincerely Interested has been chosen as a recipient of the 2013 Sappi: Ideas That Matter grant. 

We'll be creating a follow-up publication to the Green River Newspaper, called the Green River Magazine (same idea, different paper and binding)!

We have been busy driving home and nursing a sick van back to health, but in the coming days/weeks/months please look out for more documentation of and reflection on the work we did in Green River, Detroit, Windsor, and all the places in between.

“It’s not often that you get a glimpse of how a stranger sees the place you live,” says Nicole Lavelle.

That’s the premise behind the Spirit of Windsor, a new travel guide being unveiled tonight at Broken City Lab. The brainchild of Lavelle and Sarah Baugh, the piece is part art and part alternative guidebook.

“It’s an outsiders guide,” Lavelle said. “Most guides are made by locals, or people who are really familiar with the place. We wanted to see what happens when people who know nothing about a place try to do the same thing.”

Armed with nothing but curiosity and a few recommendations, the two Portland-based graphic designers set about exploring Windsor for a week and recording their observations. As a result, their guide is rather serendipitous.

Lavelle says the two-page document includes things like the Windsor Youth Centre — “because there was a sign on the door saying ‘come in’” — thrift stores, public parks and a little produce market that made the cut “simply because it had a beautiful hand-painted sign.”

Both Lavelle and Baugh have spent time in Detroit, and say they were struck by how different the Motor City is from Windsor.

“Unlike American downtowns, Windsor’s was compact, smaller and newer,” Lavelle said. “The city is also incredibly diverse, and I never would have guessed that before coming here.”

Now complete and ready for print, the guide will be provided free of charge to the shops and restaurants the two visited.
