“Look at me–you’re safe.”
Nick looked at her with a very distressed expression, he was barely able to pull himself together. He didn’t need to lose his composure in front of her anymore than he had already. And yet even now that the flashback had seemingly ended, the aftershocks hadn’t.
He was shaking, and the second he registered that she was telling him he was safe he found himself clinging to her a little. It was pretty clear he wasn’t thinking that this may make her uncomfortable for him to be doing. But he wasn’t really fully aware of much as he set his face against her shoulder. He just wanted to ground himself by feeling. The realness of the bad things had long since passed now, this was the present. Things were better.
Things were better and yet there he was crying on her. It felt like she’d just saved him even when she’d simply helped him through whatever terror his mind elected to throw at him, and he was overwhelmed.
It took a minute before he stopped clinging and moved an inch back from her. He put his arm up in front of his eyes as he was still crying. “I-I’m s-sorry.” and then came some sniffles. He was a mess, and not even the hot kind this time.
