Sam Evans was Perdido Beach's main surfer boy, son of Mary Evans, and also a nice kid. But his life wasn't totally perfect as his birth father Dwight left the family at a young age. Leaving him to deal with his step-dads that treated his mother terribly. He surfed to forget the scars that they left on his mother. And then the one opportunity came to redeem himself, to make him not the incarnate of Dwight Evans. On a school field trip, Sam’s bus driver had a heart attack and passed out on the highway. He was the one to jump out of his seat and pull the bus over to save the lives of his many classmates. This gave him the nickname Schoolbus Sam for his heroic actions. Afterwards he disappeared into the shadows. He wasn't one who wanted to be popular because he did the right thing. Although he silently appreciated the gratitude, he didn’t want to be known as that boy forever. Most days people would catch Sam back on the beach surfing with his buddies just like any old teenager in California.
When all of the residents of Perdido Beach older than 18 disappeared all of the sudden, Sam was in his AP American History class with his best friend Finn Hudson and fellow classmates Blaine Anderson and Marley Rose. Who did the children turn to during the sudden disappearance? None other than Sam Evans. He never chose to be the leader of the kids the role chose him. He saved two kids from a fire that broke out in an apartment building and helped everyone calm down after the confusion. But another thing made Sam the perfect leader, he had powers. He could shoot balls of green light out of his hands and burn anything in sight. He was a real superhero. But he doesn't know how he got his powers, no one in Perdido Beach who has them knows why. But he's determined to use his powers for good and to protect the kids of Perdido Beach. With the arrival of Sebastian Smythe and the kids from Coates Academy, he is way of them but he knows the only way to survive is to put past their differences and work together to keep the town alive.
F I N N H U D S O N - Sam and Finn have been inseparable ever since Sam introduced Finn how to surf. They’re brothers from another mother and refer to each other as ‘brah.’ Although Sam doesn’t always agree with Finn’s tendency to make fun of kids like Blaine, he’s glad to have a good friend like Finn on his side.
Q U I N N F A B R A Y - Sam never expected himself to get close to Quinn. She was the kind of girl that seemed more in love with her work rather than having relationships. He finds her attractive and her intelligent qualities refreshing. He just wishes he could tell her how he feels because her little sister seems to be in the way of Sam asking her out.
S E B A S T I A N S M Y T H E - Sam never knew he had a twin brother until Sebastian told him the day that they met. He was shocked at first, because they were so not like each other. But he’s determined to make things right with him--even if it isn’t easy--for the good of all of Perdido Beach.
