Controversial opinion but sinners was not that good and didn't deserve movie of the year. While it starts strong with heavy demonic hints Like how he just shows up in Joan and Bert's house (the couple in the beginning) and doesn't actually ask to be let inside, even though the entire first half of the movie depends on it. Then there is this scene where whichever twin it is runs inside a chapel, presumably to escape something like a demon, because everyone knows demons can't enter a church. Then it pivots into a tired vampire reveal—a trope that is usually a huge "hit or miss" and, in this case, a total miss for me. I feel the movie leans far too heavily on the star power of Michael B. Jordan, whose confusing twin dynamic feels more like a high-budget stunt than a narrative necessity; if any other actor were in the lead, this wouldn't even be in the "Movie of the Year" conversation. This lack of depth extends to the vampires themselves; once the action kicks in, any potential for interesting character development is tossed aside, turning them into mindless NPCs whose only function is to kill. Between the unnecessary sex/intimacy scenes that make the production feel "cheap" and a plot that never quite finds its own voice, like the film struggles to find its own identity. Despite a few visually cool moments like the vampire circle, or the scene with Joan and Bert's, it never escapes that feeling of being a polished, high-budget remix of From Dusk Till Dawn.
