#Repost @dominickalipersad • • • • • • Siparia was an Amerindian settlement that became the site of a Spanish mission and a Capuchin pilgrimage church which houses La Divina Pastora, a statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue is venerated by Roman Catholics as well as Hindus, who see it as representing Mother Lakshmi or the Goddess Kali. Holy Thursday and Good Friday at La Divina Pastora bear the imprint of Hindu devotional religion or bhakti. For Catholics the centre of these two days is Christ; for Hindus it is Sopari Mai. The two devotions have been taking place side by side for over one hundred years. Roman Catholic priest Fr. John Thomas Harricharan, in an article on La Divina Pastora, wrote that the statue was brought to Trinidad around 1730 by Spanish Capuchin monks fleeing persecution in South America. Hindus believe that Soparee K Mai, which means Mother of Siparia, represents the Goddesses Durga and Kali. Goddess Durga represents the power of the Supreme Being that preserves moral order and righteousness in the creation, and Kali is a manifestation of the Divine Mother, which represents the female principle. Commenting on the multi-cultural aspects of worship to La Divina Pastora, RC priest Fr. Martin Sirju, said: "I think it is a miracle in itself... This festival has led to racial cooperation and there are not many places in the world where you'll find two important Christian holidays being observed by two groups-Christians and Hindus. This shows ethnic and religious tolerance.” .
