Eastside Fire and Rescue Proudly Participates in ‘Sips and Tips’
Firefighters from your local fire department Eastside Fire & Rescue, were involved in a community fund raising event held at Sip Restaurant and Wine Bar located in the Issaquah Highlands. Held March 1, 2011 this event was sponsored and organized by Karen Lawler of Sip who has started and supports a local woman’s networking and resource group for the local community called ‘Sips & Tips’.
In March the group decided to get local men who had a variety of services to offer and have woman buy raffle tickets and chose the types of services that they were interested in winning. At the end of the evening a raffle would be held to determine the winners of the many services offered. These services included hairstyling, computer work, fitness training, wine pairing, golf lessons and many more. EFR Local 2878 firefighters decided to sponsor a dinner and tour of fire station 73 in Issaquah Highlands. The meal would be prepared by firefighters for a group or family up to 4. The dinner would also include a tour of the firehouse and safety talk. This was a great opportunity for the local firefighters to meet and be involved in the community. Approximately 50 women from the community came to this event. The event raised over $1500 for the American Cancer society! Again, it was an honor to be part of an event that is fun and has a great purpose!
During such events that the local firefighters participate throughout the year we have the opportunity to really identify with the community and the people who we support! These events give us the chance to inform the public about safety issues, planning escape routes during fire emergencies, planning for natural disasters and being prepared for a minimum of 3 days. In addition we are able to inform the public about the types of emergencies the Eastside fire and rescue responds to during our shifts, explain our shift calendars, get involved politically to understand what the needs of the public are, and mostly it is a great chance for us to meet and become familiar with the people that we love to serve in our community!
The winner of the night was a local woman who is excited to come to the Issaquah Highlands firehouse and share the experience with her daughter and granddaughters! The evening brought about many new friendship and opportunities to stay involved. There were many great conversations that focused around our jobs, and understanding the types of jobs that our community member’s hold. There was a great awareness and understanding that the event was truly about raising money for the American Cancer Society! At Eastside Fire and Rescue we look forward to maintaining a strong presence in this great community!
