This is my baby sister’s makeup look for July 4th. She is 14 years old, and far better at doing her own makeup than I was at her age, because she loves it. I’m choosing to share this, not just because it’s a flashy holiday look, but because I want everybody to know how incredibly proud I am of Angelina for doing one of the things she loves most in this world despite the constant side eyes and snide remarks given both to her face, and behind her back. “She’s only 14, that’s way too much makeup for her age.” “You look trashy, nobody needs to wear false lashes like that.” “You look prettier without makeup! No need to be a cake face”. My sister IS 14, which is when so much of our social development as human beings is taking place. She’s learning how to love herself, both as somebody who is bigger than some other kids her age, and as somebody with a physical disability (Spina bifida) that prevent her from doing a lot of the things her friends do. Makeup is something she can be PROUD of. It’s something she’s GOOD at and people admire her for. It makes her feel SO good about herself, and it’s disheartening to see people judge her and try to impose their internal biases on her. So maybe think about what you say to a literal child about the things she enjoys? As Angelina loves to remind everybody, makeup has no age. Makeup has no gender. Makeup has no rules. She gave me permission to share these photos and her history because she wants EVERYBODY to do what they love unapologetically, and to support each other in their passions. Also she wants me to tag James Charles because he’s her biggest makeup inspiration in the world or something. #makeup #fourthofjuly #iloveyou #sirensingsforyou #jamescharles @jamescharles https://www.instagram.com/p/BzhdCkDpzzN/?igshid=bw7rjkh50b38
