A new study by research firm SiriusDecisions reveals that despite its importance to the business, the databases of b-to-b organizations are akin to an attic filled with contents that over time have not been properly labeled, managed and maintained.

Demand Waterfall: What is it?

Most business-to-business (B2B) organizations use a demand waterfall to track the health of their new business efforts. For most of these organizations, it determines the health of the businesses or a product long before the actual results in revenue are known. Looking at the correct key metrics and tracking them monthly, can help any B2B organization keep its sales and marketing efforts on track and in-sync giving them a true pulse to their sales and marketing efforts.

Before you can measure key metrics of demand, you should understand the basic concepts of the demand waterfall. When conversion rates within the waterfall change at various stages, a number of factors are often working in concert with one another. By understanding what form these factors often take, you will have a head start on remedying issues that arise over time.  

The SiriusDecisions Demand Waterfall is one I believe in as a marketer. I have a few extra steps added to my demand waterfall simply to ensure they are followed when beginning or changing an existing demand process. Demand is simply the creation of interest and the Demand Waterfall processes is the processes in which a company takes a prospect from an inquiry/interest to a closed sale.

Inquiry/Interest: A prospect takes an action to show interest in your company,service, or product.

Marketing Validation: The prospect validation process to determine how valid the contact is and where the contact is best suited in the database. Marketing priority for qualification and lead scoring begins.

Marketing Qualified Lead: Marketing validates and qualifies the prospect based on product marketing profiles of customers and partners. This determines how best to proceed with an account. The prospect is further validated and scored to determine if there is a need, timeline, decision maker, and budget for your sale. Once this is determined, sales accepts

Sales Accepted Lead/Handoff: This is the most crucial step in the process since most knowledge is transferred at this stage. The prospect is validated internally by your own sales team. The sales department then accepts the lead or rejects the lead based on the information provided.

Sales Pipeline: The prospect is then added to the sales pipeline once the lead as been accepted. Sales then uses their process to move a prospect from a suspect to a customer.

Closed Deal: Sales receives acceptance that the prospect is now a client. The deal closes and client relationship marketing begins.

The demand waterfall can give most businesses a snapshot of where you are right now, and what is expected for the future. If your plans never changed, then all would be well - your revenue and planning needs are met. But the reality for many managers and executives can best be described as a planning process that is in a state of constant change, with too much information to track and too little time to make sense of it. It's critical to know-- What changed? How much? When?

This is where the demand waterfall analysis can help by providing a vehicle for answering the above questions if the right key performance indicators (KPIs) are tracked. As with most measurement tools, having a demand waterfall in place is only half the battle; learning to diagnose why numbers within it ebb and flow over time and using the diagnosis as the basis for action is where real wins are achieved.
