Selfishness was one thing Sirius wasn't comfortable with himself. However, he figured, the situation was dire and he was out of options... well, out of easier options. This K-1 visa was his last ditch attempt to stay in the country and if the board would just extend his H-1B visa already, things would be fine. He didn't want to go back to the Netherlands. Did he truly love Talia when he decided to propose? Yes. Was a year plus of dating enough? No time to answer that for now.

But... but, but, but... he wasn't exactly in a place where he truly wanted another marriage. It was something he'd thought he would actually delay but now it's a little too late. How bad could it be though? They never ran into major problems and any disagreement they had has always been resolved maturely. Until right now of course... He had been trying to persuade her to change the date of the ceremony so they could have it earlier.... which meant they have to change the venue for the third time. Talia was narrowing her eyes at him and a heavy weight sunk deep into his gut, twisting it into a knot. Still, Sirius pulled himself together and his brows knitted, feigning concern. "What is it, schatje? You don't want to change the date?"

An introvert through and through, Sirius was secretly glad that the dinner was cancelled. He preferred spending time after work at home, be it lounging around with a book and tea or doing more work. After Sarah passed on, that was how he spent his evenings. Tonight was supposed to be him working on some research for an artefact he was entrusted with but Sirius decided against it. Working too much was taking a toll so he opted to continue reading the recent book his colleague had authored. Unfortunately he had left it upstairs in the room and had to make his way to fetch it before he could continue in his study. With the said book in hand, Sirius was about to descend the stairwell when a figure caught his attention. His heart thudded against his chest as he eyed the figure - it was definitely female.

He blinked at her. “Ah, so this was what the university meant about having some sort of security,” Sirius whispered nonchalantly as if it was a personal monologue. “You know, I told them there was no need for any kind of safe for this artefact.” Sirius was sure that it was insignificant enough for it to be stolen. It was just another artefact from the Roman empire and it was his bad for taking it out of the encasing and stowing it away elsewhere in the house. He was usually right however, tonight his ego was going to be bruised. Sirius gave the woman a glance over as he quickly descended down the stairs. “You don’t look like a collector,” he remarked once he was at the bottom, just a few steps away. “Collectors and learned persons who know about this statuette wouldn’t hold it like that,” the Dutchman gestured with his pointer figure in a circular manner towards the artefact. 

It wouldn’t be the first time for an artefact to be stolen in history but Sirius never had it happen to him before. He was curious to know how she was going to escape since he was so close to her and he’s rather fast. “I really have to install that security system,” he muttered, exhaling as he met her gaze.  “How much are they paying you for this one?” he asked, curious. “I do wanna know if it’s really worth your while.”

“If that is the attitude we’re having tonight I’ll drink my crap beer alone thank you,” Selina was fond of the poorly made drink. Was one of the first she had tried when she was young, better days when the world didn’t feel as if it was crumbling beneath her. her first instinct was to snap again, jump on his throat, did he actually give a shit? Logic trickled in not long after, if Sirius didn’t like something he’d say so.

His face gave away his distain for the wine, a small snort left her, “I can find you something more your speed if you’d like,” she smirked. No doubt she had a bottle of one of Bruce’s expensive whiskey’s tucked away in a ceiling tile, specials occasions only. “Just a bad day in the office,” she offered as means of explanation. She had seen a stark reminder of how delicate her situation was, another thief had been caught working both sides, they weren’t so lucky to take a beating and move on. Flashes of her own body by the Gotham river were what she was trying to chase off.

Sirius wrinkled his nose at her response. “Nuh-uh,” he mumbled, forcing himself to swallow the slushy wine. Deep down he knew he was just being a jerk to her unreasonably. “I’ve come this far,  schatje.” He gestured to the wine bottle before grasping its neck and giving the bottle a gentle pat with his other hand. “If you’re feeling shitty, then so be it.” Ever since his wife’s death a few years back, Sirius had come to the realisation that the validation for being shitty is somehow a human need. Weird - but oh so true. 

“Bad day in the office being the city?” He tried to come off less of an asshole but that obviously did not work. He quickly reeled it in. “Sorry, I mean... okay yeah. Shitty day at work, shitty alcohol to conclude the day, of course.. you wouldn’t want to top it off with a shitty pizza or instant noodles do you?” He shot her a look before scrolling through the food delivery app mindlessly. “Because I’m starving and I’m not going to puke all because of... this on an empty stomach. What say you?”

"Fruity beer... Jesus. Someone should really update their liquor collection or you're just going to ruin your liver with worthless alcohol." Sirius decided not to argue any further though. There is no way he wanted to be sober with this firecracker. It's always easier when he's tipsy - or rather it's much more fun. "What made you all snappy tonight?" he prompted, popping open a bottle of slushy red wine. Can't be too bad is it? Shit, the scent of the wine was all wrong. Still, it was too late to back out as he sipped on it. Shitty it is.
