hi so since i have no one else to talk about TLAT with im just gonna leave some of my thoughts here if thats ok .....?? let me just start by saying that TLAT is my fave fic of all time and i adore the writing !!!!!! i was rereading it recently tho and i feel like there was so much internalized misogyny that i had not picked up on before lmfao like all the girls are constantly slut shaming each other and i felt like they were especially mean to carlotta. i will not defend her cause she has her flaws but i think some of the hate she got was unnecessary and i feel like the guys she would hook up with never got as much slack as she did. and i know that this is a trope that has been played in every single piece of media since the beginning of time but i felt like the girl's hateful attitudes/slut shaming kind of took away from their personality at times ??? like i ADORE mary right, but when she would start shitting on other girls i was really upset and i know that she and all the other girls are better than that. and it sucks cause jules wrote the friendships between the marauders and other guys super well and that energy was not always reciprocated with the girls ??? i also understand that this fic was written in 2007 through 2013 so obviously this kind of behavior from girls in books/movies was popular and jules was simply a product of her time (ha) or maybe jules intended to write the girls that way ??? i still love the story and the characterization but i think the slut shaming/ "im not like other girls" mentality was too much sometimes aNYWAY sorry for this dump i just wanted to know ur thoughts cause i love ur blog oki byee
hi! yes!! this is such a valid point to make/observation to have. I remember feeling really uncomfortable in a similar manner when I first read TLAT. I honestly do think that Jules wrote them all intentionally this way - it’s a really acute manner of showing the reader how immature they are, and what the social climate was like, and how they all have so much growing to do in order to understand each others’ perspectives and lives.
it’s definitely something that you have to work through when reading and accept as a part of the lexicon/world-building that Jules has created! in all honesty, it’s probably more accurate to high-school-era conversations between girls in the 70s than a more progressive, third-wave-feminist dialogue would be. it is uncomfy though - I completely empathize!!
“I love isa and liv… but maybe green or pink??”
Hello @siriuslygaby, it is I, your Secret Santa, and after a couple mishaps I was able to make contact with you. Through answers (and through some stalking of your side blog) I’ve made this gifset for you: a little green, a bit of pink, and a whole lot of isa x liv. Enjoy! 💞🎅🏿
