When these two powers [life and capital] are united, they together possess an expansive force, and the labor the worker will perform during the year, will always be worth more than the labor during the preceding year, with which he will maintain himself. Industry provides a constant increase in wealth as a consequence of this surplus value, [...] This increase may either become the income of the industrial classes, or be added to their capital. But, generally, the capital which pays the wages of labor and makes work possible, never remains in the hands of those who work. It is a consequence of a more or less unequal division between the capitalist and the worker, a division in which the capitalist is determined not to leave to the worker more than what is just necessary to maintain life, and keeps for himself all that the worker has produced over and above the value of that life.

“I am convinced that one falls into serious error in wishing always to generalise everything connected with the social sciences. It is on the contrary essential to study human conditions in detail. One must get hold now of a period, now of a country, now of a profession, in order to see clearly what a man is and how institutions act upon him.” —Sismondi (c1830) sounding a lot like Thomas Sowell #thomassowell #quote #sismondi #environment https://www.instagram.com/p/BneUTCmB3a4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7tro7d129jag

Sismondi needs to get over himself. The Renaissance is not the triumph of despotism over the pure chivalry of the Medieval Era.
Calm down, Sismondi. Drink a glass of water. William Roscoe can get one for you only you hate Roscoe so maybe he won’t.
Let us beware of this dangerous theory of equilibrium which is supposed to be automatically established. A certain kind of equilibrium, it is true, is reestablished in the long run, but it is after a frightful amount of suffering.
