Imagine being Mabel and Dipper’s older sibling and a wizard.
“Mabel, what happened?” Ford demanded, grabbing your arm and pulling it over his shoulders so your full weight wasn’t resting on your little sister.
She was in a panic, eyes wide and words pouring out in a jumble as they set you down on the couch, “I-I don’t know, a monster came at us and they jumped in the way and there was lights coming from their hands then-then they just collapsed!”
Ford frowned heavily as he examined the smoking wounds on your hands. The burns seemed to follow a faint swirling pattern that looked familiar. “You said light came from their hands?”
“I-I think so, it happened really fast.” There were tears in Mabel’s eyes. She worried the ends of her sleeves in her fingers, “Are they gonna be okay?”
Ford rested a six-fingered hand over your forehead, checking your temperature, “Has your sibling ever exhibited strange powers, Mabel?” he asked, “Any sort of strange behaviour?”
She shook her head sharply, brown hair flying across her face, “I don’t think so.”
“What’s going on, Great Uncle Ford?” Dipper insisted, his own face twisted with concern as he wrapped an arm around Mabel’s shoulders to calm her.
Ford held up one of your hands and pointed a finger to the patterns in the burns across your palms. “I’ve seen this before. It happens when magic users overexert their abilities. If a spell takes too much energy or isn’t performed properly, some of that energy can backfire on the user.”
If Mabel was shocked by the revelation, she got over it quickly, her concern for you outweighting everything else. Secrets or not, you had gotten hurt protecting her. She needed to know you were going to be alright. “But are they going to be okay?” she repeated, gaze pleading with Ford to give her good news.
Ford nodded, lowering a hand to rest on the girl’s shoulder. “They’ll need some time to recover their strength but, yes, backfires are rarely deadly. We’ll know more when they wake up.”
Mabel chewed her lip and moved to pick up Waddles, laying the pig next to you on the couch. The burns on your hand had finally stopped smoking. Waddles snorted and licked your chin. “I don’t care if you’re a wizard. I’m still your little sister. No matter what.”
