Very smart of BP to release a picture.
I went to Sister Space this weekend and it was fucking amazing. I didn’t have to devote any mental capacity to keeping an eye out for men the way I usually do and my memory was so much better for it—I met dozens of women and didn’t forget a single one of their names, even though I’m usually terrible at names.
I never thought I would actually have the courage to cut my hair short, but I did it at Sister Space and it was so easy because over half the women there had short hair. Seeing gender-nonconforming women really does encourage other women to be GNC.
Then I got home and Facetimed my parents. My dad picked up and was like “oh you got a haircut that’s neat” and then my mother saw my hair and yelled “WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO?” and walked offscreen. Dad said she had both hands on her head and was just standing there. I hung up.
She tried to call me back and texted to apologize, and I called her back eventually, but that reaction really sucked.
I’m going to Sister Space this year, and I even got a friend to go with me!
This will be my first women’s festival and I am so excited! Honestly, I wasn’t sure how into radical feminist praxis my friend is, but I told her all about the festival and promised that she wouldn’t be able to swing a dead cat without hitting a lesbian and now she’s psyched for it.
I can’t wait!
