What's to See?
Tourist Attractions
Some of the most magnificent sites to see in Australia are national landmarks. These monuments serve as a part of the identity of Australia, and more specifically Sydney. The Sydney Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House are recognizable attractions that bring in business while creating an opportunity unique to being in Sydney. These monuments stand tall and create a sense of national pride throughout the community. The Habour Bridge and Opera House are two locations that are considerably responsible for putting New South Wales as a necessary destination on a travelers map.
Sydney Harbour Bridge
According to Australia.gov.au the Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of Australia’s most well known landmarks, which officially opened on March 19, 1932. Almost 15 years short of being 100 years old, this bridge is the world’s largest standing steel bridge, with its peak over 130 meters above the harbor. In 1998 the bridge became open to tourists, as they were now capable of climbing the monument. The Bridgeclimb is not only a huge attraction and on the top of every tourists to do list while visiting Sydney, but the Harbour Bridge is also a large driver for the economy as it brings in a large scale of revenue from paying for the climb experience, as well as tolls. After participating in the Bridgeclimb, I personally feel it is safe to say that this is the most spectacular view to ever be visualized of Sydney. Our group was able to experience this opportunity during Vivid, a lightshow where different artistic creations are projected throughout the city. At the top a member of the Bridgeclimb staff stands atop the bridge and takes everyone’s pulse. As we stood at the top for a brief moment it was almost a euphoric moment. I felt on top of the world, as well as at an extreme level of peace, although I was exactly sure if this was just the numbness from the cold temperatures. This was definitely a unique experience that I would recommend to every person who visits Sydney.
Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is not only a national treasure but also an international monument. The Opera House is several different types of performances such as dance, music, theatre, opera, and musicals. It also hosts different restaurants and bars, and stores for shopping. I regrettably was unable to attend a show or performance, but I had the opportunity to have several meals at the Opera Bar and the Opera Kitchen. Both of these restaurants overlook the harbor, as well as the Harbour Bridge, with dinning outside on the water in sight of the Opera House. The monument is most notably known as an architectural masterpiece, with different rooms and venues scaling of a variety of sizes and interiors. It holds the second largest in door venues. It also holds a room that are said to have spectacular views of the harborside. The Opera House has undergone recent renovations; however, keeping in sight the vision of the initial architect, Jaron Utzon. Utzon received the Pritzker Prize, an international architecture’s highest honor. Utzon, unfortunately passed away in 2008, but not without leaving behind a international landmark and a prestige architectural legacy.
I also had opportunities to travel throughout the harbor on numerous ferry rides, and a mid-day cruise on an authentic tall ship. We sailed around on the boat for about 4 hours, learning history of the area and the boat, experiencing how the crew lives, because many of them actually live aboard the ship, while enjoying the morning with brunch and good company. These landmarks and their significant location could not be more majestic. It was amazing to be able to see the city and these monuments up close and from afar. The city, bridge, and Opera House were visible during time on the boats and ferries, as well as from Watsons Bay, a city a short ferry ride away. Here we were able to see the entire skyline from atop of a boulder that also overlooked the ocean. This is another location I would recommend as it gives perspective to how spectacular these monuments are. Traveling around the harbor, eating wile overlooking the water, and even just simply visualizing the Habour Bridge were just a few of the luxuries of our location in Sydney. If I could go back I would like to be able to go to a performance inside one of the Opera House many venues. The architecture was described as majestic and even emotional. Each venue specifically captures the art in which is performing. This is one opportunity I missed out on in Sydney, and wished I had taken an hour of my day for a tour. The inside of the Sydney Opera House will forever be a mystery. Well, hopefully not forever.
