SineWaves in conjunction with the Lamar Dodd School of Art and The Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies present two videos by artist Hito Steyerl: In Free Fall (2010) and Lovely Andrea (2007). Both films chart the lifecycle of objects through space and time in line with Sergej Tretjakov’s concept of the “biography of the object” from 1929. “In Free Fall” is at once a biography of the Boeing 707-700 4X-JYI airplane used in the film Speed (2004) and a commentary of the economic global collapse of the early 2000s. Steyerl visits an airplane graveyard that provides movie props for films and aluminum scrap metal for the creation of optical discs. Commissioned for Documenta 12, “Lovely Andrea,” raises feminist politics around the Japanese pornography industry, as Steyerl tracks down a photograph taken of herself in the nawa-shibari style in Tokyo in 1987.
Hito Steyerl was born in 1966 in Munich. From 1987-90, Steyerl studied camera at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tokyo. From 1992-98, she studied documentary film at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film Munich.
“Steyerl likens her documentary strategy to the montage aspects of protest movements themselves: piecing together a platform, building a coalition. To that end, Steyerl amasses an eclectic array of sources, integrating unlikely windfalls from her research and selecting found-footage that effectively highlights and deepens the central narrative of each film.” –Anna Altman, Frieze
“Steyerl’s art is extremely rich, dense and rewarding. She’s digging the dirt at the heart of the art world.” — Adrian Searle, Guardian
“Truly an art for our times.” —Timeout
