anyways my input to this dani/kassim mess and probably my last comment about it:
i still consider myself a muslim in a majority muslim country that grew up in a primarily muslim-arab culture. and the mentality of “you have to find a good muslim partner” is so prevalent in the culture that it’s almost toxic? it sets up any muslim person of the opposite sex to be a potential partner in the eyes of people around you and that SUCKS because sometimes you just want to be friends and/or have no interest in them at all. i’ve seen people fall back into this obligation and end up miserable in their families.
to me, it seems like where eskam is going with this is this obligation in amira’s mind conflicting with what she wants (and the obstacles that come with it obviously since it’s not the ‘easy’ choice). intercultural (and inter-religious(??)) relationships are hard and especially for religious muslim women in most senses and i think it’s cool if eskam is going this route because it’s still a very real and very relevant story to tell. amira is sticking to her guns while also trying to reach for what she wants and that’s admirable.
