Why is there such an strong expectation for the skams to rep the lgbtqi+ community on every season? Do you think the skam fandom is largely made up of people who are apart of that community?

Hello anon,

yes, I believe so. Especially here on tumblr. Tumblr at large has a strong lgbtqia+ community that is very active in fandoms. Also for years, we've starved for good representation and for someone to tell our stories truthfully and with the full complexity they deserve.  It wasn't always the case that the skam fandom was full of queer people. Before s3 it was a show that half of Norway was watching and many of the neighbouring Scandinavian countries knew about it but it was a show known for its straight white ship - Noorhelm. But then s3 came about and it exploded on the internet overnight. Queer people flocked to it like a moth to light because here was a story about a gay boy that didn't follow the same coming out cliches that so many other shows did. Here was a show not from American high school played by 25-year-olds pretending to be 16. That show raised our expectations so incredibly high that from then on we demand every other show to reach those expectations because we know it's possible. we expect every show but especially the remakes to represent not just our sexuality and gender identity but all our various identities. Skam was also a show that managed to show mentally ill teenagers in a positive light and showed us that they do in fact exist and not just as some horrible stereotype. It was one of the first western shows that dared to have a hijabi muslim girl as the main character and have a whole season about her. So now we know all of those things are possible. It's possible that we are represented in all of our various intersecting complicated glory. And some of the remakes even went a bit further and keep raising our expectations. Skamesp giving us two girls falling in love and one of them being mentally ill, Skam Austin giving us a black lesbian, Druck giving us a trans man of color as the love interest and now mentally ill main character with a potential future main black lesbian character. we've starved for so long and we didn't think it possible for so long but now we see it IS possible. we see that this really can be done and done well and so yes there are high expectations for these shows to represent us which is also why we're so disappointed when the remakes fail to do so
