#SkateLikeHer with Cindy Whitehead: Episode 2 of #LikeHer series

At age 7, when Cindy Whitehead picked up a skateboard in her hometown of Hermosa Beach, little did she know her impact would exceed farther than the end of her driveway and leave an everlasting mark on the world of skateboarding. In the 2nd installment of the #LikeHer series Cindy gives a vivid account of her rise to becoming one of the first “top ranked professional female vert skateboarders in the U.S. for pool riding and half-pipe.”

Skating her way into the male-dominated skating world, Cindy recognized that she was a part of the lucky few, and still boundaries remained for female skateboarders wishing to do the same. Through her skateboarding line Girl Is Not A 4 Letter World Cindy encourages skaters of all ages and abilities to aspire to greatness and “take every dare that comes your way”. More than a skateboarding movement, #GN4LW represents the shattering of the glass ceiling not only in sports, but on a corporate level as Cindy’s brand gains respect from major companies.

You’ve heard the phrase before, “Representation matters”, but why does representation truly matter?

Including diverse people/characters in the mainstream media not only lifts the self-esteem but narrows the achievement gap for underrepresented populations.

Namely, Michaela De Prince, world-renowned ballerina’s journey to stage began when she saw an advertising of a ballerina. Dancing has transformed Michaela's life from a war torn orphan to a star ballerina. A single image inspired her to pursue the art form of dance.

#LikeHer was created to generate more images of positive female role models, in hopes of inspiring the next generation of thinkers and risk-takers. Each episode of #LikeHer is created to highlight the work of specific women in a male dominated field. When a young girl sees images of powerful and successful women, it becomes apparent that she too can embody those traits. This “young girl” was once Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and several others who strived for something greater having seen other women achieve greatness.
