INTRODUCIN’ #56 THE SKATING PARTY

The Skating Party is the avatar of Philly based artist and multi-instrumentalist Gregory James who made all our pop dreams come true with the answers to a few questions we posed to him!

01. Hey How`s it going and how are you?

Great, I can’t complain. I just released a split 7 inch with “the Death of Pop,” from the U.K., and should have a follow up out in the Fall. Things are good!

02. What city are you from and what are some of the things you love about that city? 

The wonderful city of “brotherly love,” Philadelphia. Phillyis definitely a tough town. I think it is one of the hardest places to earn respect as a musician. You definitely have to work extra hard when gigging here to get any attention or admiration whatsoever in my opinion. The city is not really known for helping one another get ahead, despite the brotherly love title. It’s more like every man for themselves, but I think that makes for good art.

03. What artists made you want to get into making music?

I started playing drums when I was 13, before the guitar, keys, etc., and back then I was all about John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. I think good drum parts lay the foundation of a great song. So I have to say those drums were the gateway drug to my affinity for rock, followed by post punk, new wave, shoegaze, brit pop, and everything else over the years.

04. What was the name of the first song you ever wrote and what was it about?

 I was always writing lyrics, even before I could play an instrument, and even when I drummed in bands, but I think one of the 1st complete songs I ever wrote was very sad and about typical high school crush stuff. I can remember the melody, but I can’t remember the name, and I would have to go digging through shoeboxes and lyric books to find it. I must’ve been 16, because I remember figuring it out on guitar when I was bedridden with chicken pox in high school. Once I figured out how to put a song together on the guitar, well, it was all downhill from there haha. Wow, this was a tough question, well done.

05. How was the most recent gig you played? Where was it? 

The last gig I played was at Boot & Saddle, here in Philadelphia. It is one of the best venues in Philly and usually features national touring acts. We had a great show, even though it was 4th of July weekend, the turnout was great.

06. What are some things you could not live without musically?

First, I could not live without my Roland Space Echo. It’s a lot of fun to experiment with on recordings. Also, I have a replica of Prince’s cloud guitar from Purple Rain which is going in my coffin, and of course my extensive vinyl collection, I’m at about 2 book cases full right now.

07.  What is the most strangest experience you have ever had touring?

During a college tour, years ago, our opener was a balloon magician. He was in the Guinness Book of World Records for his “craft.” And yes, sadly we were upstaged…haha.

08.  Is there any thing particular you do before you play a show? 

I like to get there early, set up as much equipment as I can backstage, warm up the voice and have some pre-show cocktails and socialize. There’s nothing better than being prepared and relaxed before a gig. Plus mingling around a bar before and after the show can be just as much fun as the gig itself.

09. Any local artists that you are into and would love to share with us?

Sure, “Wonder & Fury,” “Illinois,” and “Sonny Knockout.” Definitely all worth checking out and all Philly area bands.

10. Any sleeping tips?

Z-Quil. It’s Nyquil without the cold medicine ingredients. It will knockyou right out. Also, sleep headphones, I can’t sleep without them. It’s a good way to block out any outside noise and zone out with a podcast or audiobook.

VBS Skating party

so for the last day of VBS (where i worked for three days) we had a big all church/parish skating party, and halfway through the night my friend Issac dresed up as pope Francis and skated around getting high fives from people....so i was skating with the fucking pope...
