Been working on and off on this piece for a few months when the artsy mood hit me. I tried to challenge myself to incorporate some of the lessons I learned without using any references — which, uh, had mixed results.
#note to future self: do not go 'eh i'll just wing it on the proportions'#i’ll be honest i almost didn’t share this#because she looks like a hobgoblin i swear#but i learned an important lesson during this#sketch first#line art second#flat color third#shading afterwards#because you can pick up on structural/proportion issues in the line art or color phase that are easier fixed#than they are once shading gets involved#so have a hobgoblin jedi#at least i finally figured out a method for adding color to grayscale stuff#and used textures (which the tumblr quality may eat the details of)#and actual painting techniques to make the shading pop and stuff#baby steps#i gave myself permission to redraw this at a later date#guess who’s practicing portraits next#my art
