Skin Mag - An Exercise in Hindsight
Orange County has an endless stream of indie pop flowing out of it’s cities, and last Fall I fell into the waters of Skin Mag. The 5-piece outfit boasts only 4 songs as of now, but will be dropping their long-awaited debut EP on March 8th. Their recent track, “An Exercise In Hindsight”, comes nearly a year after the release of their first 2 songs, and with it comes an obvious progression in the band’s style.
Since moving out to the Los Angeles area about a month ago, I haven’t been able to ignore the amount of times I’ve seen Skin Mag’s name pop up. This band has been working incredibly hard even though their music has barely dipped it’s toes into the streaming service world, and that drive was what gravitated me towards them. August of 2018 brought me to one of their shows by chance, and that 30 minute set left me with a feeling similar to sinking into the waves on a sunset-soaked beach. Their brand of shimmering, surf-y, and subdude indie pop is one that is taken on by quite a few artists locally, but Skin Mag has created a perfected and effortless form of music that none of their peers can seem to touch.
“Mourning Sickness”, the upcoming EP from Skin Mag is high on my list of anticipated releases for this year, and should be on everyone’s as far as I’m concerned (whether or not you live in California). Their next show is on March 3rd at The Constellation Room in Santa Ana, so make sure you’re following them on social media to stay up to date!
