Unpopular opinion: your writing tools are not designed for writing.

Google docs is a word processor. Notion is a project manager. Scrivener was revolutionary in 2009. final draft hasn't meaningfully changed since… actually when did final draft last change?

None of them were built by someone who sat down and said "what does a writer actually need when they're deep in a project?"

You need your research next to your draft. You need your character notes visible while you write. You need to be able to pull up a pdf or a youtube video without leaving your workspace. You need your outline and your manuscript in the same place.

This is not a radical concept. this is just… obvious? and yet.

We're trying to build that. A writing studio where everything lives together. And we want writers telling us what's missing while we build it.

has anyone accused you of using AI when you didn't?

because it is happening more. to novelists. to fanfic writers. to screenwriters who have been writing in their specific weird voice for fifteen years. someone runs their work through a detector, gets a percentage, and suddenly the conversation shifts from "is this good" to "did you even write this"

and there's no receipt. you can't prove a negative. you can't hand someone the seventeen drafts of that one paragraph. you can't show them the four hours you spent cutting a scene you loved because the story needed it gone. you can't make them feel the way the sentence changed three times before it landed right

so we built something

it's called HAAS. Human Authorship Authentication System. and here's what it does not do: it does not read your words and decide if they sound human. it does not scan your prose for "AI tells." it does not punish you for using the word delve

what it actually does is watch how you write. the pauses between thoughts. the rhythm of your revisions. the pattern of your backspacing and rebuilding. those things are yours in a way no AI can replicate, because they come from the specific way your brain moves through language, the hesitations, the second-guessing, the burst of words that comes when something finally clicks

over time, it builds an authorship profile. a 0 to 100 score. proof that doesn't depend on someone else's algorithm deciding if your voice sounds "human enough"

you shouldn't need to prove you wrote your own work. we know that. but we also know the world is asking for it anyway, and we wanted writers to have an answer

writer brain vs. what writing software thinks i need

writer brain: i want my research next to my draft. right there. on the same screen. writing software: have you tried... a second window? and then a third? and then losing track of which tab had the thing?

writer brain: i want to look at the version from march and the version from today side by side writing software: sure just scroll back through your save history. it's only 47 entries. good luck.

writer brain: can i just have everything for this project in one place writing software: absolutely. just paste links between six different apps that all forgot you were logged in

writer brain: i need to focus writing software: great news, we redesigned everything. the button you used every day? gone. here are 200 new ones though

writer brain: why does none of this work the way my brain works writing software: your brain is not on our roadmap

the gap between how writers actually think and how writing software expects them to work is genuinely unhinged. like we figured out word processing in the 80s and then just... stopped asking writers what they needed.

someone on here once said "i don't need a better app, i need an app that gets how projects actually feel from the inside" and i think about that constantly. research and drafts and notes and versions all living together, not scattered across your whole computer like a crime scene.

that's basically what we're building with skrib. just trying to make the inside of the tool match the inside of a writer's head for once.

anyway. what's the one thing your writing setup does that makes you want to scream. i know you have one.

What is your stance on Gen ai?

honestly? i think the conversation is missing a whole middle.

right now it feels like there are two camps. one says burn it all down, AI is theft, period. the other says let AI do everything. and most writers i know don't fully belong in either one.

i have real concerns. writers' work getting scraped without consent is not okay. AI-generated slop flooding the market is not okay. the erosion of craft is not okay. those fears are valid and i'm not here to argue with anyone who holds them.

but i also think there's a difference between AI that tries to write your novel for you and a tool that helps you find the note you wrote at 2am three months ago. one replaces you. the other just has a better memory than you do.

so the question i keep coming back to is: who's in control? if the writer is in control, if you see every suggestion and decide what stays and what goes, if your voice stays your voice... that's not replacement. that's just a tool.

that's the hill i'm on.
