february 06, 2014 - mostly shrimp (mostly the amanos)
remember that amano that i posted about a little while ago? the one that i was sure was going to die? guess what, he's alive! again, i have no idea what happened to him. one day i just peered in the tank he was stuck on his side with swimmerettes that wouldn't fold back up. he couldn't move, he couldn't eat. all he could do was like...flick backwards when he thought danger was around. it was strange and almost looked like he had some sort of neurological disorder going on because he just laid there and twitched. it took him three and a half days to learn how to walk again, and i saw him eat for the first time in like a week yesterday. today, he's more or less back to normal. he stays in the 'amano corner' more than his three comrades, but he's gone back to picking off the driftwood and doing normal shrimpy behavior. super happy that this guy pulled through, and even happier that Bandit didn't try to make a meal out of him while he was down and out. speaking of my amanos, i'm about 75% sure they've figured out Bandit is no threat to them. for a long time, they wouldn't come out and forage when the lights were on. in fact, they just used to hid in the 'amano corner', or in a notch underneath a piece of driftwood until lights out. about three days ago, that changed. they would stay hidden underneath the plants, but they wouldn't really venture out from beneath them. yesterday, i caught an amano out in the much less densely planted foreground foraging for food, and today, he had a friend with him. they're starting to get brave, and with good reason because Bandit really isn't a threat to anything that's not a snail's antennae or a brightly colored highlighter. i'm glad the shrimp have finally figured it out. can't wait to see how bold they actually get. i've heard storied of amanos catching rides on fishs' fins. hopefully mind get that comfortable.
oh, and Cricket dropped her eggs. as in, she hatched them, i think. but since she's an amano in a freshwater tank, none of them will survive. bummer.
update on project: new shrimp tank. i'm postponing it. again. :x mostly because i want to rescape the five gallon. i really like the way that Chia's tank turned out. Bandit's tank has a really overgrown look which i love, but i want to make it a pinch more organized. i also want to add some more stems to the mix to help combat this sudden algae bloom (thanks to my new and more efficient lighting), specifically those of the hygrophila genus since they're my favorite. the plan was to have the new shrimp tank here and cycling now, but i think i'm gonna push it to the end of February. that gives me time/money to get the five gallon done and out of the way before starting a whole new project. gonna have to figure out what to do with this mess of java ferns i ordered in the meantime, though. i also have a ton of moss that i'm gonna have to keep alive for another two weeks. fun. and as a side note, i'm quickly approaching my next follower milestone! i was thinking of doing some sort of small follower giveaway for it. i've got tons of plants, food and fishy goodness to spare. i'm saving all the really good stuff for when i hit 500, but i thought that maybe some free moss, a couple stem plant trimmings and a food sample or two would be a nice gesture.
