#skulduggery posting #we both agree that there’s several male characters that aren’t quite fully afforded the identity of ‘man’ throughout the series #characters like billy-ray / scapegrace / fletcher and more are treated a certain way by the narrative #in a way that other men in the series aren’t #and while you could argue it has a lot to do with their roles in the story #i’m of the opinion that it has a lot to do with the way that they perform masculinity #very much feels like derek gives characters certain traits that are incompatible with his idea of well performed masculinity #and as such the male characters in question with those traits don’t get the same amount of narrative respect that other male characters do
